Help with EASY routine
« on: July 16, 2009, 01:49:12 am »
Hi there,

I've been trying to do the easy routine now for the past couple of weeks, but my 5 week old little boy is still waking up a lot in the night.  This is what i've been doing so far:

8am:
E for 20 mins
A
S 9.15

11am:
E for 20-25 mins
A
S from around 12.15-30ish for 1.5-2 hours or so

2pm
E - 20-25mins
A
S from around 1.15ish

5PM
E - 20-25mins
A- bath time
S 6.15ish

7pm - top up feed

10.30ish - DF (although, this isn't a dream feed at the minute as we can't feed while he's asleep he won't take my boob or an expressed bottle, so we have to wake him up).  I'm expressing as it seems to be easier to feed him at this time by bottle, but he's very rarely asleep and therefore needs burping afterwards.  However, he tends to go down pretty easily after this.

The problem is he then wakes up at 2.30-3pm, which is ok, although I would love to stretch this out!  But he then won't go back to sleep for ages.  When he eventually goes back to sleep - around 4ish, he then wakes again at 5ish which is driving me crazy.  I'm pretty sure he's getting enough food as when I express i can easily get 4-5oz out from one boob and they're pretty full by 2.30-3ish so he has a good feed then, i just really want him to go back to sleep after his feed at 3ish, or even better sleep for longer.  Does anyone have any advice???
Would greatly appreciate it!

Also between bath time and top up feeds should i be playing with him at all or straight to bed? at the minute he's going to sleep straight after his bath and only waking up briefly for his feed at 7pm.

Thanks ;)

Welcome Arabella08!  Congrats on your new little DS!  VERY impressive routine for only 5 wks, I might add!!  Good for you!

I'm no expert and I'm sure others will be hopping on shortly... but a couple things that jump out at me:

1)  Does he use a paci?  That helped my LO a lot in those early wks to settle down at night... some LOs have a stronger sucking reflex than others and it might help if you're not currently using one..

2)  I wonder if putting him down right after his bath might be too much nighttime sleep or even a little OS from the bath?  He is awfully little still, though, so maybe 14 hrs of night sleep is just right for him.. I'm not completely sure on this one - but I might suggest doing a long WD routine with him between bath and bt... again, though - it's impressive that he's even going down that early, so I don't want to mess you up!!  When my LO was that age, she was wanting to go to bed at 9-10 p.m..

3)  What are you doing at 3 a.m. to try to get him back to sleep after the feed?

Keep us posted...!  You're doing great!

Hi there!
Congrats on your new baby!
Truthfully in the first 8 weeks or so, EASY isn't even close to perfect because wee newborns are so unpredictable.  I can say that looking at your routine it looks like he's having long awake periods in the day - sometimes 3 or more hours between sleeps?  Maybe I'm reading it wrong.  At this age, he should almost be napping every hour... like wake up, feed, be awake for 45 minutes, start winding down, and back to sleep.  Also two night feeds at this age are fairly normal and this may take weeks to reduce.  He could be up and restless in the wee hours of morning because he's overtired from not getting enough sleep in the day.

Thank for the above messages!  To the first reply, yes he does have a pacifier but he doesn't seem to want to take it after his feed at 3am - he just stays awake making noises and occasional crying until 4ish or so and then awake again at 5.
To the 2nd reply, according to BW book Tracy says by 1 month to try and only give them 1.5hours sleep between feeds so that's what i've been trying to do...so feed for 25mins (half hour all in by time i've got him up etc) play for 45mins - 1hr and then sleep again for 1.5 hours.  Is this too little do you think?
Thanks for your help!

It looks like you're on a pretty good 3 hr EASY, but like pp, I do wonder if the restlessness at night is OT... He is still so little, though, I wouldn't stress too much about it yet... just enjoy him!! =)  Get to know him and start learning his sleepy cues - that'd be my advice, anyways..

As for the A and S time - 1.5 hrs/nap is right on target... I think pp was more talking about A time.. be careful to count A time from the time he wakes, not from the time he finishes eating.  Does that make sense?  At 5 wks, LOs can usually handle only about an hr of A time - again, that's including eating.. and you'll want to start the WD before he gets too tired...

Have you seen this page?  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64158.msg476652#msg476652  It gives a great summary of A times for all ages...

Hope that helps.

Hi again
Yes I think all BWs start off by giving A time on top of eating, but now I just automatically think A= awake, not activity... especially since in the first two months or so they really don't "do" any activity.  So counting all awake time, an hour is probably average for a 5 week old.  Sleeping 1.5-2 hours is typical at this age too.  I didn't know Tracy suggested no more than 1.5 hours?  What book is that in?  I'll have to look it up for my next baby!

Anyway, like I had mentioned before, I learned that a perfect 3 hour EASY doesn't really exist right away.  So you might find that he's on a 2.5 hour EASY some days, or some eating cycles during the day and that's ok too.  In my case, we did a 2-2.5 hour EASY for the first 8 weeks because DD needed to nurse more often than 3 hours, but it worked well because she also started sleeping through the night early (I think because she had a lot of calories in from the day).

Look up the EASY routines 0-3 months in the EASY forum, under FAQ I think.  You'll find lots to compare.  That 6:15pm bedtime might be too early, but you could treat it as the evening catnap.  Most babies take a catnap before their actual bedtime, a shorter nap, like 45-60 minutes or so.

After bath, I'd do very little stimulating or activity.  At night, when he wakes to feed, just quickly feed and back to bed, no lights, no talking, no excitement.

hi thank you!!!  Had a really good night last night...and yes, he does vary from 2.5 - 3 hours which I thought was normal which is good.

Last night I did a feed at 6.30 - 7 as he fed at 4, so it worked out better than a 5pm feed.  Then he went down properly at around 7.45ish and i actually managed to DF him at 10.45 although he annoyingly woke up just at the end, but went straight to sleep.
He woke again at 2.45 but for the first time in 10 days he went pretty much straight back to sleep again until 5.45......so i'm very happy today!  Fingers x this will continue going forward, but we'll see.  He's a pretty good little boy so I can't complain.  thanks for all your help.

PS - Tracy suggests no more than 1.5 hours of sleep in her "The Baby Whisperer Solves All Your Problems" book, but maybe that's just a guideline.  And to be honest, it's quite difficult to entertain a 5 week old baby, so i'm more than happy to leave him sleeping for 2 hours rather than struggling to keep him awake an extra half hour...or indeed finding things to entertain him!
