Hi Les,

I think the EW's are not really EW's cause if you are putting your lo to bed at 6 / 6:30 pm, she is doing 11 - 12 hours which is normal at this age.  Most lo's do around 11 - 11.5 hours at this age.

I think that once you get the first nap longer the second one will fall later, and then hopefully this should make your wake up later in the morning.

If you are only getting between 45 mins - 1.25 hour Nap in the morning, I would consider extending the morning A time to 3.25 hours.  Hopefully this will help you get a longer AM nap.

Great news that the change of scenery is helping extending your lo's A time.

Hi Paula,

Thx for checking in the other day, sorry about the delayed response I was away for the weekend, my first nights away without Emma...it was a nice break and she loved it with her Dad!

This is where we are at now. Today, she woke at 5:30am, was up for 3:35 (OT) slept for 1hr 10 min...up for 3 hr 45 min slept in the car for 1 hr and had trouble going to sleep (OT) and finally asleep at 6:45...usual sleep time is 6:00pm. She had a busy day today so our routine was a little off.

I think she woke from her first nap b/c she heard me open the garage door. Tommorrow, I will try slightly shorter up times and see how we do...our naps seem to be getting shorter so we haven't been able to move the bedtime up to 6:30 yet.
Do you know what the nap times/ up times should be for 9 months?

How are you doing?

Thanks Paula,
Les

Hi Paula,

Good to hear from you!

We are in a bit of a much again...we went up north for the weekend and it threw things off. So a few days we have had to give a third cat nap just with the way things have worked out.

So today,

Woke 5:00 am- tried to put to sleep no luck
Eat -Milk 6:00 am/ Solids 7:00 am
Nap 8:10- woke at 45 min mark, tried for 1hr, no luck

Eat- Milk 10:00
Nap- 11:00 ( only up for 2 hrs but tired b/c of short nap and trying to put back to sleep)

This is where we are today...I have been slowly trying to increase AT again to lengthen our naps but each day seems to be different...we haven't had 1 1/2 hr naps in awhile now and end up putting Emma to sleep at 6 so that she does not get OT. Also, seems like now her midday wake time is the shortest of the 3?

Any thoughts?

Thanks Paula,
Les

What sort of A times are you working on now?

If your lo wakes at 5 do you leave her in her cot until 6?  If so then count 6 as your wake up time and see if you can get her to do a normal lenght A time.  This way you are still hoping to get a longer nap.

Hi Paula,

Today looked like this....it was our first day of 2 naps only which is great;

Slept over 11 hrs at night ( bed at 6)
Woke: 5:20 am
AT: 3 hrs 10 min
Nap 1: 1 1/2 hrs

AT2: Put down at 3 30 mark but took an hour to fall asleep ( was in the room with her but she did most of it on her own, I just stepped up when she needed a little help)
Nap2: 1 1/2 hrs

AT3: 2 hrs 10 min
Bed @ 6:10

When she wakes in the morning she usually calls for us right away ( I haven't tried to leave her to cry it our for very long to see if she will go back to sleep). We try to go in say good morning, give her a few toys in her crib to play with but she stopped playing on her in own in the morning a few months ago. Lately, she seems pretty hungry so I change her diaper and feed her and then put her back in the crib or on the floor to play. For some reason at this time of day she likes us to be in the room with her. We stay in the nursery till about 7.

Wasn't sure if I should keep her up until 6:30 tonight but thought I should hope for a few days of consistent naps before I moved the bedtime to later??? Any suggestions.

Thanks Paula

Wo

Great news on the good naps  ;D Sounds like she is going well.

If she is crying a mommy I need you cry in the morning, definitely go in and see her, but if she is just moaning on and off, that may just be her mantra cry to try and re-settle herself.

11 hour nights are fantastic, sounds like she is doing well.

With her taking so long to fall asleep for her second nap.  Do you think she could have needed a bit longer A time?  Maybe try 3 hours 40 mins and see how she does from that.

Hi Paula,

Thanks for your reply.

We are slowly increasing out AT's as our naps have been about an hour the past few days but this morning was a little longer and the nights are almost 11 1/2 hrs if I put EMma to bed @ 6pm..so that is great.

Paula, one thing that still confuses me is when to go into Emma's room when she wakes up. For example, when she wakes early from her nap say around an hour I have started waiting a bit...between 3 to 5 mins to see if she settled herself back to sleep or settle into playing in her crib for awhile. Her cries aren't really mantra cries but not full out screams sort of moderate with stops in between..if they become consistent I go in.

I guess I am feeling afraid that if I don't go in right away she will think I am not their for here and will be wondering " I am up, and calling for her, why isn't anyone coming for me" and feel like she can't trust me to be there for her ( I know that is a big assumption for a little action) and on the flip side afraid that by going in right away I am taking away her chance to learn to have fun on her own in the crib or put herself back to sleep when she is still tired?

So I am wondering if it is o.k. to wait for 3 to 5 mins of moderate cries to see about resettling or am I doing harm. Also, if she wakes up at the hour plus mark and I know it would be "ideal" to get 1 1/2 hours of sleep does it makes sense to spend some time trying or just focus on increasing the AT's and wait for the naps to lengthen that way.

Thanks so much Paula,

Les

Hi Les,

Sorry for the delay in replying, we have been having a few sleeping issues of our own  :-\

Does the cry sound like she needs more sleep?  I am wondering if she is waking but is still tired.  Have you tried going in there just befor the hour mark and trying W2S?

How old is Emma now?  What sort of A times are you working on now?

A lot of the time the moany cry is just them trying to self soothe, I know if my DD is doing this I generally just stay outside her room, and if she starts crying harder I then go into her to calm her down.  The moany cry can be a type of mantra cry.

Hi Paula,

Thanks for your reply. I hope you guys are sleeping better now.

Emma is 10 months and 1 week now...

We had a little illness set back last week. So, right now we look like this;

Wake sometime b/w 5 and 5:45 am
Nap #1 3 hrs and 10 mins later ( 1 - 1/2 hrs)

Wake and up for 3:25-3:30
Nap #2 around an hour

Cat nap for about 15-20 mins around 4

Bed between 5:30 and 6:00

We are trying to keep the day to 12 - 12 1/2 hrs and Emma usually sleeps at night for 11 1/2 hrs.

We haven't tried w2s yet but I can and see what happens.

Can the moany cry still be a loud cry?but stop and start. As Emma has gotten older and her lungs stronger her cries are loud....when they get more consistent with no breaks in between I go in but if there is space between them I usually wait a little longer.

Hi Emma,

Sorry for the delay in replying to you I have been away on holiday.

Wow, 10 months, that has gone so quickly.

Ok, looking at your first nap, I would perhaps try and increase the A time so that you can try and get a 2 hour nap.  Perhaps to 3.5 hours.  If you get a good nap of 1.5 - 2 hours, you can then increase the second A time to 3.75 - 4 hours and that way you can eliminate the cat nap.

Looking at your routine, he is not getting an early waking really, as he is going to bed really early.  Once you are able to increase the A time, you can try and extend your day a little bit so that your DS goes to bed a little later, and hopefully will wake up a bit later.
