4 1/2 months, all of a sudden everything went horrible
« on: August 26, 2009, 19:57:33 pm »
I started my DS on E.A.S.Y. when he was 4 weeks old. It took 3 weeks of shhpat to get him to be able to fall asleep on his own.  Ever since then, he has been a wonderful sleeper. I do winddown, swaddle him, and put him in his crib. He makes fussy noises (not crying) for about 5-10 minutes and then falls asleep. He has done this from 2 months to 4 months with no problems.

Currently his schedule is wake up (between 7 and 7:30am), eat, up for 1 1/2 -2 hours, sleep for 2 hours. So he is on a 4 hour E.A.S.Y.  He typically sleeps for 2 hours, never less than 1 1/2 hours. He sometimes wakes at the 45 minute mark, fusses for a minute or two and falls back to sleep. He takes 2 long naps during the day and then a 45 minute to an hour catnap in the evening. He usually takes the catnap in the swing, because he's really fussy in the evenings, even after being on a great routine during the day.  He goes to bed between 7 and 8 depending on when the catnap ended.

Just in the last week and 1/2, we started having issues at bedtime. He cries and cries and cries. Usually I give him a few minutes, to see if he can settle himself, but now he can't.  I thought that maybe his reflux was bothering him, so I started feeding him an hour before bedtime to see if that helped. It didn't.

Now, for the last 2 days, his naps have been horrible too. He's had issues falling asleep and then wakes at the 45 minute mark and doesn't go back to sleep.  I have tried doing shhpat or a variation, but he will not go back to sleep.  I don't know what to do and how things turned bad. I have been really good about sticking to the routine.

He has started rolling over, but doesn't when he is swaddled in his crib. Last night and today I tried leaving one of his arms out so he could suck. I figured if I had to teach him how to sleep again, he might as well figure out how to sleep without his arms swaddled so he could self sooth. I thought maybe it would help if he could have his fingers to sooth him.  Now I am thinking I shouldn't have done that...

Please please help.

I think I solved the problem. It turns out that he was just hungry.  I had lots of trouble breastfeeding and I think my supply is a bit low. I was so intent on following the babywhisperer 4 hour routine that I didn't take into account that sometimes you need to tweak things a bit for breastfeeding.

After DS breastfed today I offered him a bottle of some expressed milk.  He gulped it down (normally he refuses--I have had to supplement while bringing up my supply in the past).  Then he took at good nap. He was really fussy on the breast before bedtime after a few minutes because I guess there was not enough coming out. I gave him an extra 2 ounces (all he wanted) and he went to bed really easily, just like he used to. That's the first time he's done that in about a week.

I think my milk supply is lower at night to begin with which is why he's been fussy in the evenings and not being able to sleep. I am going to pump after feedings and start feeding DS more often. It is more important to feed him and keep my supply up than to worry about getting 4 hours between feeds.  I know he goes to sleep great as long as he is full, so I don't think I'll have any trouble!

Hey sweetie,
great that you have this figured out, remember to drink heaps more water and you might want to try fenugreek or something like that to increase your supply too??

xx Good luck,
Lizzie
