6 month Food or Formula Sensitivity?
« on: October 08, 2009, 22:31:50 pm »
Hi - does anyone know how I know if my ds is having a reaction to rice cereal or formula?  He has just starting spitting up a lot, and develops awful, deep hiccups about an hour after a bottle feed.  He's just started on solids (rice cereal and apple and sweet potatoe puree), but barely has much at all, so I don't think it's that.  I'm thinking that it's the formula, although he has been on the same one for over 2.5 months.  Should I try a different formula, and if so, how do I switch?  All at once, or gradual?  He's on Nestle Good Start.

Thanks!

If he has been on the formula for 2.5mo then I would first start by just taking the rice cereal out of his diet.  It would be easier that switching formula.  If he doesn't improve then you know it is the formula.

Have you been introducing the foods one at a time?  Are you sure it isn't the apple or sweet potato?

I'm pretty sure it's not the other foods, but not 100%.  The amount of solids per day is probably a teaspoon.  He really hasn't taken to it.

The digestion issues have just gradually crept up, it's hard to tell when it really started.  Rice cereal and formula are the two things that I give every day, so probably a good idea to cut out the rice.  Should I avoid all cereal at this point and just feed sweet pot, pear and apple?  Or, should I take a break from solids completely - with the amount he's eating, I'm sure he won't miss it!!!  BTW he is 6.5 months.  Thanks!

If you are not 100% sure which food it is then I would take a break for a week or so, see if he improves.  If he does then start back slowly.

Rice cereal can cause digestive issues because it is constipating (the rice), so you can skip it altogether and do an oatmeal or a barley cereal.

Thanks for your help - just to clarify, should I take a break from ALL solids for about a week and then start again?

Hi - so I avoided all solids yesterday and the good news is that there were very few spit ups.  The bad news is that after a bottle (about 30 min to an hour after) he had terrible, wet hiccups.  Gripe water took care of it, but still makes me think that maybe the formula is bugging him, too.  OR...maybe he's just having tummy issues in general?  Arrrgggghhhh!! Any tips besides just wait and see??

Thanks!

Sorry I was away for the weekend.  I did mean cut out all foods and then try again if you aren't sure what it could be.  He probably isn't eating much at the moment anyway so it is good to figure out what the issue is.

We didn't formula feed so I can't speak to changing formula up and all that.  If there are food issues it will take a couple days for it to be completely out of their system.  I would wait another day or two, if there are still issues then you can talk to you doctor to see what they might recommend.

You may also want to take a look at this link and see if any of it applies
