solids and milk ...fitting in with routine?? help!!
« on: October 05, 2009, 09:08:17 am »
Hi all

im not sure if this is the right place? fingers crossed!!

My lo is 8 months and BF...she has 3 solid meals a day and Im struggling to fit in milk feeds and solid feeds to fit in around naptimes...

routine (on a good day!!);

E...7
E...8 - BREAKFAST PORRIDGE 3TBS, FRUIT 1 TBS
S...9.45 - 11.15
E...11.30 LUNCH 3 TBS PROTEIN MEAL AND 2 TBS FRUIT
E...1 BF OR SIPPY CUP
S...2.30 - 4 (I WISH!!!)
E...4 BF
E...5 TEA OF 2 -3 TBS VEG MEAL AND 2 TBS DESSERT
E...6.30
S...7

I had to change the solids to be before the lunch milk as I had huge problems getting her to eat anything here and she is so active I need her to eat protein!! she is now taking alot more solids and still will take milk an hr or 2 after but I worry about the amount of E after the pm nap cos she has milk at 1 then 3 hrs later again then 1 hr later solids and 1 hr and half later milk!! she does seem to be stuffed when I put her to bed and has had the odd NW which im sure is discomfort as sometimes I can hear she has gas on waking...

am I overfeeding her? how do I get around this one without having to change the sleeping routine?

any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

I think your routine is fine.  If you find that she seems to be overstuffed then you could cut back on the solids for dinner.  What vegetables are you feeding her?  Some can cause gas.

Hey sweetie,
This is a really hard time for fitting everything in, but I agree your routine looks good!!  I also agree with pp about decreasing the dinner solid feed if you are worried about her over eating.  I found giving more finger food type things at dinner (all food is finger food for Dyllan these days LOL) meant that he could eat what he wanted and I wasn't spooning too much into him if that makes sense?

Just remember until 12 months milk is the most important food, all the rest is a bonus a good source of nutrients and experience :)  You look to me like you are doing fine!!

Try the finger food in the evening or bring dinner back a bit earlier so there is more of a gap before bed :)

Good luck lovely

thanks ladies...

thats really helpful ...think I will definately cut the last solid feed a bit! Have also found out that she has milk allergy so think the wind was from the odd cup of formula I have been giving her lately!!

Lizzie - we are trialing dairy free diet for me and her as doc thinks the milk allergy is causing the reflux...explains alot...still not so sure myself tho but definately worth a shot!!

any fab ideas for finger foods for my Jasmine that are dairy free and will give her some protein?

Hi Annette,

We always seem to have simliar issues at the same time!!!  I only asked a very similar question the day before last.

Your routine looks very similar to ours, and all I feel that I do is feed J.

For finger foods, I give him steamed cauliflower, parsnip brocolli, roasted pumpkin is a fav.  ALso cucumber and fruits, crackers too.  Not much of it gets eaten at the mo as we are still very early into the fingerfoods stage but he just loves playing with it and sucking on it.

Sorry to hear about the milk allergy. But at least you now have an explanation as to why things are going astray.

Take care

Em

yeah we always go through the same stuff dont we!

thanks for the ideas! think I will do some veggies for her tomorrow and see how she goes...I have already been giving her bread, melon apple and other little bits of naughty stuff thats now forbidden (cakes and treats have the milk in!!)...

today I ended up changing routine around a bit and it worked quite well I still gave milk after the lunch then after her nap I gave solids at the milk time and then just the milk at bedtime and she seemed fine....we will see what the night holds!

Hey lovely, there are some great recipes for dairy free cakes and meals over on the food intolerance board.  We went dairy and soy free for four months recently (I had to also because I was breast feeding)....

If it's a protein intolerance it will take up to two weeks to see an improvement as this is the length of time it takes for the proteins to clear from the body, if it's lactose intolerance I think it should clear up a lot faster :)

Finger foods that I gave Dyllan, I especially liked the oatmeal cookies with sultanas in them, I used dairy free spread to make other biscuits (just substituted) and the chocky cake recipe is BRILLIANT and SO easy..yum yum, even my incredibly picky step daughter liked it!!  Just be careful of your bread too, lots of them contain milk powder, I made my own with my bread maker :)

For morning tea, Dyllan always has fruit (still does), that's the rule in our house.  Afternoon tea is more fun stuff (as long as the fruit gets eaten LOL)...You can get dairy free choc chips and make chock chip muffins cut up, or little museli bar type things with oats and dried fruits and chock chips etc....honestly go and have a look on the board there are great ideas (the pancakes are delish too xx)

Good luck sweetie, hope that helps a little

No problems sweetie,
If you are completely excluding dairy from your diets I would encourage you to read labels really really closely 'cause it's in darn near EVERYTHING....it's incredible I even found dairy protein in tubes of chopped herbs (basil and coriander) for crying out loud.....it makes you wonder why they feel it's necessary to put all these different things into foods that are tasty and flavoursome all on their own!!

I have a book called "cookies for everyone" which is dairy, soy, gluten, nut and egg free if you need more ideas and like baking :)  Just let me know!!

Big hugs lovely
