Should I wake from naps??
« on: October 05, 2009, 11:39:02 am »
Hi

My LO has now been napping for just over 3 hours.  Sometimes she takes shorter naps during the day and sometimes one really long one like this.  Admittedly we didn't have a great night last night but I'm not sure what I should be doing - do you wake them after a certain time regardless or leave them??

Thanks

Kerry

Hi there, how old is your LO?  What does your routine look like?  Could you post your day for us in EAS.  Typically the answer is yes, wake to keep on your routine and so as not to rob night sleep.  But it really depends on the age of LO, the way your day looks i.e. short napping and OT, and whether they are in a growth spurt or have an illness which precludes EASY.

The tweaking never stops!

I think it just depends and you need to know your LO.

With my 6 month old, he is an awesome sleeper (thanks to BW!). He normally takes 1.5-2 hour naps. If he wakes early once in awhile (but over 45 min), I just get him up because I KNOW that it is not going to effect his overall good napping. If he sleeps for 2.5-3 hours, I also let him sleep because I KNOW that it is not going to effect his night sleep or cause and early waking.

However, back when I started the BW routine, I had to do trial and error  because I didn't know if a long or short nap would effect these things.

I'd say do a little trial and error. Let LO sleep however long she wants, but if it effects the night sleep or causes EW, then don't do it again!

Those 3 hour naps probably won't happen all that often, so I'd take advantage when you get them!

Generally speaking though you don't want any one nap to be longer than 2 hours because then it will rob from night sleep. BUT we all get OT or sick or whatever and need some extra sometimes!
