6 1/2 month old suddenly won't sleep
« on: October 09, 2009, 17:55:24 pm »
My 6 1/2 month old baby has always been pretty good at going down to sleep and has slept through from about 14 weeks. Now however he is taking around 2 hours to settle and is waking several times during the night. I am not sure if this is due to teething ( he is drooling a lot but doesn't seem to be in pain when he wakes) or if it is connected to introducing solids.

His routine was -

6.30  - wake and milk ( b/f)
8.30 - 10  - nap
10 - milk and solid
12-1pm - nap
1pm  - milk
3 - 4pm - nap
4pm  - milk and solid
7pm - milk
7.45 - bed.

I have now increased his solids to 3 times a day so he is getting solids after breakfast, lunch and tea, however this is proving slightly random as he is now sometimes sleeping to 8 am after his night wakings. Typically now he is not going down until  9.30pm ( I am still giving him his last feed at 7 pm) then waking roughly at 10.30, 11.30 and 12.30 then again around 3 or 4 am.  He has not done this since he was a couple of weeks old.  He doesn't appear to be hungry when he wakes although if I pick him up he will want to feed for comfort and  that seems to be the only way I can get him to sleep around 9.30 as pu/pd doesn't seem to work.  If picked up in the he will stop crying but the minute he is put back down in his cot he cries. I have tried repeating this several times over but it doesn't seem to make much difference.  He seems very sleepy during his last feed but comes to life when he is put in his cot, and gets upset if left in it although he is perfectly happy to play as long as he is not in his cot. It is as if he has totally forgotten how to self sooth and get himself to sleep and I am worried that giving him extra feeds/rocking etc etc are just making things worse.

During the day he is a really happy smiley baby.

Any suggestions as to what we could do ?

Thanks
