2 year old not falling asleep at night
« on: November 18, 2009, 03:27:32 am »
DS is 26 months old.  He's been consistently falling asleep at 9:30-10 for weeks now.  Any suggestions?  Here's our schedule.

7-7:30 wake up
7:30  breakfast
8:15-11:15 nursery school (snack around 10, I think)
11:30  usually a small snack (he doesn't eat much for breakfast or at school), sometimes lunch
12:15ish  lunch
12:30-1 down for nap
up from nap about 1 1/2 hours later (usually about 2:30)
snack between 2:30-3:30 when he wants it
6:00ish  dinner
7:30  bedtime routine
8:00 bedtime - he stays on his bed and looks at a book or does I don't even know what until he falls asleep an hour or more later.

I cut his nap from 2 hours to 1 1/2 about a week ago.  So far, there's been absolutely no change in the time he falls asleep.

Any suggestions?  I feel bad for making the kid stay on his bed for so long at night, but I really like the 8:00 bedtime.  He goes down for naps like a charm;  I put him in bed, and he's usually out within 10 minutes.

Hi,

I read that when they take longer to fall asleep at night they may be dropping their nap, but if he's going down at the usual time for naps and then sleeps this may not be the case.
Has something new happened recently (home renovations, new friends, starting nursery..)? Is he teething? I do not think it is bed to leave our LO in bed if they are happy there. He may need extra time to wind down and is able to do it on his own. It may be just a phase.

Sorry I could not help much!
cheers
gio

He is working on getting his 2-year molars;  he's gotten one already and is working on at least 2 more.  Aside from that, the only other thing I can think of that's changed is that he's discovered how much fun DD (6 months old) is to play with - but she's always asleep before he is, so I don't think that's causing him to stay up late.

My son also took longer to fall asleep at night when he was getting his molars. It didn't last long. I would say to keep his bedtime consistent if he's happy in his bedroom.
You could also try to reduce his nap to 1hr, see how he goes.

good luck

ditto to what markymum said,  for the molars it takes our lO alot longer to fall asleep at night.  If he is happy in there, then that is fantastic, he prob  needs the rest time.

Also, our LO has been taking alot longer to fall asleep if he has had a long nap that day, if you aren't sure whether it is the molars you can experiment with cutting the nap to see if it helps him fall asleep quicker...  but if he;s teething he prob needs that nice nap.
