Pumping Yielded No Milk - what's going on?
« on: November 19, 2009, 15:07:35 pm »
Hi all -
First of all, thanks for all the replies to my other post. I feel much better about going back to work and pumping and not so worried about my supply anymore.

That being said, I have a new issue. I've been pumping quite a bit more since I've returned to work last week. My nipples have become much more tender, which I'm assuming is from all the pumping. Last night I put a bit of lanolin on them to help with the soreness. I gave my daughter her dreamfeed via a bottle that I had already filled (was from previous day's pumping supply) and a little later went to pump out what she would have gotten if I had nursed her (and this had been 4 hours since she had last nursed). When I pumped, I got NOTHING out. I usually have a very quick let down when I'm pumping and nursing, but not even a drop came out.  My breasts felt pretty heavy so I believe there was milk in there. This stressed me out a little, so I went to bed but set my alarm to get up 3 hours later and try again. I got a little milk out that time, but it wasn't much and at this point my breasts were very full.  My DD started to wake up, so I decided to attempt to nurse her and she seemed fine doing so, and my breasts felt empty afterwards. I was able to nurse her again a few hours later and then pump once I got up, this time being able to get out reasonable amount (not as much as usual but it had only been about 2 hours since she nursed so wasn't expecting the normal amount).

Any idea why I couldn't pump anything for those two tries? Could using the lanolin have been the reason (clogged something and prevented the milk from coming out?) Everything on the pump was working so I know it wasn't from that. I just want to make sure this doesn't happen again and understand what happened too.

Thanks for any thoughts!!

Were you tired at all? I find if I try to pump when I am exhausted nothing really comes out. Stress will do the same thing. Can you adjust the setting of your pump? I don't think pumping should make your nipples tender or sore unless the setting is too strong.

I don't think I was any more tired than usual. Since I started work I have noticed that I've been little more stressed since I'm still figuring out what routine is going to work best to balance work and family.  I can adjust the setting of the pump - but I usually put it on the highest setting because I've read that it gets the best results.  I'll probably try a lower setting from now on.  Thanks!
