starting the 2-1 transition 10mos?
« on: November 22, 2009, 20:55:03 pm »
Well... things have changed once again.

DS is 10 mos and has been waking earlier, falling asleep later, and naps have been getting shorter.  He still STTN though and sleeps without props.  Wondering how to go about his naps now.  Am I correct to assume that I need to try pushing the am nap later and shortening the pm nap to preserve a normal bedtime?  Today DS was up just over 4hrs A and has been asleep for 1.5hrs (still sleeping).  If he sleeps for 2 hours, and he manages another 4 hrs A, then he will be due for his next nap at 5pm!!!  What to do?  Allow him a 30 or 45min sleep and put him to bed at 7:30?  I just don't know what to do.  Any thoughts?  Greatly appreciated.  leath:)

I'd do a catnap tonight and wake him so he'll go to bed at a reasonable hour, like you said.

Then you need to decide which way you want to approach the 2 to 1.

A) short am nap and longer pm nap (a lot of people have success with this as a long pm nap tends to get better overnight results)

B)long am nap and short pm nap (some los resist a CN once their A time extends to 4 or more hrs. so they can't get a short pm nap and end up with a very OT lo and/or a very early bedtime)

So depending on what will work for your lo.

Also, making sure he doesn't get too much daytime sleep will help. 2 to 2.5 hrs. should be sufficient. The more sleep he gets during the day, the less he is likely to sleep at night. Unless he is a higher sleep need type kid.

:) HTH.

Oh.  That's helpful.  He's been averaging 2-2.5hrs of day sleep lately and I thought that it was getting low and was concerned.  I'm glad to hear that's the norm for this age.  So, he had a 1.5hr nap and a 30min catnap.  Put him to down for a nap at 3.5hrs A so as to get the catnap in earlier rather than later.  He went down easily and woke at 5pm.  So now he'll likely be in bed for 8pm.

Thanks for the input.   We'll see how the night goes.

Success!  So, DS did 4hrs A, then a 1.5hr nap, then 3.5hrs A, and then a 30 min nap (had to wake him), he was in bed at 8pm and for the first time in a month, he slept to 7am!  Robbing Peter to pay Paul paid off!  He was getting close to 3 hours of day sleep, and his night sleeps were getting shorter and shorter.  I think we'll continue to go for a good long first nap and keep the second nap more of a catnap.  Thank you for the link as well.  leath:)

Hi lexie-Sounds like his A time is getting longer as well so he is not tired quite yet for his naps. You can try the same as leath and do a long am nap around 11-12:30/1ish and a catnap later on at say somewhere between 4:30 for about 30/45 minutes. OR you can do the catnap first a tad earlier 10:30 say (doesn't matter if he's not tired enough to sleep long then b/c you're going to wake him anyway) and wake him after 30/45 mins and then do a long pm nap somewhere between 1-2ish (you'd have to play around to see how long of an A he can handle after a short nap). Either way it's time to steal some time from one nap and put it with the other in order to fit his growing need for more A time. He still needs naps though which is why we do this until he's ready for just one nap.
