short naps- change A , sh-pat, wake to sleep?
« on: November 23, 2009, 20:30:33 pm »
My ds is 11 weeks.  I have just started EASY, although we had been doing it loosely already before.  What I have started is trying to get him to sleep by himself.  I have been rocking him until now.  I know it will take time to teach him this.  However even with the rocking he will only nap for between 20-45mins.  He is still tired when he wakes up, often screaming.

So today, instigating shush-pat, and he went to sleep on his own (eventually!), when he woke I shush patted him.  But this took a long time.  his happened several times before next feed.  I stayed in room with him to catch the wake ups straight away.

So just want some advice really.  His A time is about an hour, and I move him upstairs at first yawn.  SHould I make this shorter or just persist with the shush pat.  Or perhaps wake to sleep?

I am new to this, but so determined.

hi there and welcome!!!! Its fantastic you are wanting to teach your son independant sleep, its something i have NEVER regretted!

ok so when you say his A time is an hour are you including feeding, nappy change, wind down etc? A time is "eyes open to eyes closed" and for an 11 week old the recommended A time is 1 hour 15-20mins (obviously watching for sleepy cues rather than the clock though)

I basically go until his first yawn, which is always about an hour from eyes open.  So once he is then asleep it is probably about an hour 20mins.  This morning he woke again after 45mins, so I shush patted him back to sleep.  So he will end up with 2 45min naps, with about 10mins in between where he wasn't properly awakw (I stayed in room to pre-empt the wake up!)

45min naps are pretty commonat a young age, for the first three months they are focusing on their night sleep and sorting that out. there are a few things you can do to help him out though, have you tried these:

swaddle
darken the room completely
white noise
paci

20min naps are a sign of overtired, if he only sleeps 45mins you need to shorten the next A cycle or else he will become overtired and thats a mess you dont wanna get into :)

shh/pat is a fantastic tool and W2S is really good for getting through OT.

are you able to put up how your day went in EASY format?
eg

wake up 7am
E7.15
A1 hour 20mins
S8.35-9.20   etc etc
