7 wk old wakes constantly during naps- need ideas
« on: November 26, 2009, 16:21:16 pm »
Hi all- my baby will be 8 weeks on Tues- for the last few weeks he has been waking constantly during his naps.  I have him on a 3 hour EASY, and he is swaddled when I lay him down.  I have no problems reading his sleep cues and getting him to sleep- he falls asleep on his own in the crib, sometimes with a paci, sometimes without.  It never fails- he will wake up constantly for the first half of naptime- the first at about 20 minutes, then every 10 min or so afterwards, until finally he is so tired he will stay asleep for a good chunk.  By then it is almost time for him to eat again, and though I hate to wake him for a feed, I do.

Though I can always get him right back to sleep, I have been trying to figure out why he is waking so much.  I do stay with him after I put him down to make sure he is in a deep sleep.  He has had stomach issues all along- he is formula fed and is on liquid Similac Sensitive, as he could not tolerate anything else without severe gas pain.  Perhaps gas is waking him?

Any ideas of things I might be overlooking?  Anything I can do to eliminate these wakings?
Thanks for help

I think staying with him for the first 20 minutes is actually a really good idea.  Young infants go through a series of jolts as they settle into deep sleep (~20 minutes into their nap), and so it's quite possible that he's jolting and waking up...then keeps jolting, waking...so on and so forth until he crashes because he's just exhausted!

What I would do is just apply pressure to his arms and legs and wait for about 20 minutes.  It's a while, I know, but they eventually grow out of it by ~2.5-3 months.

It could be gas that's bothering him, but I would try the pressure thing first for a few days to see if that gets him some longer naps.

You could also try shh/pat or white noise to help him out for those first few minutes.

How dark is his room?  That might be something else to look at.
