engored breasts at night
« on: November 25, 2009, 22:50:05 pm »
Hi,
I am new to this board but have a couple of questions.

have been breast feeding since birth, gone through mastasis (second week!!!), low supply, and too much supply but my 11.5 week old is still giving my boobs a good run for their money.
he is now on a combined breast milk and formula diet. He has 2 formula a day and the rest (5 in total) from breast or expressed. I only last week started the second formula which is the 22:30 (attempted as dream feed but mostly he gets stirred). i expressed for a few days (preparing for the growth spurt... :) ) and now not doing anything. my issue is that now that i have stopped expressing, my breasts gets so engorged at night that by the time he wakes for a feed (he gives around 6.5 hours of sleep) not only are they are sore, but also bub has difficulties attaching which makes the feed not great in terms of amounts and i have sore nipples all over again.
is there anything i can do to ease it for both of us or shall i just suck it up for a few days and it will settle by its self?

my second question is regarding poos. Since around week 9 (started on the 1 bottle formula at week 5) he goes every three days, twice in a row. it is usually toothpasty-like texture and usually he makes a lot of noise and his body goes into 'poo-mode' but only once or twice has he really cried. is this normal?

Thanks

I've experienced the night-time engorgement - It's a real bummer when baby is sleeping, so you're happy, but you can't sleep because you think you might explode.
The 2 episodes, which lasted a good week or more each time, where when I eliminated the 3am feed, and then a month later, when I weaned the DF (that was easier than dropping the night feed since it's gradual).
I found wearing a tight bra (or 2 bras when it was really bad), helped significantly.  Lo's now sttn but I can't sleep without a bra yet - too uncomfortable for the amount of engorgement I still get.
When it was really bad, I'd pump, but only 2 ounces tops - didn't want my body to get the idea to up production any further, and removing 2 ounces really makes a huge difference for me.
good luck.

Hi there

This might help with some ideas on engorgement and helping babe to latch: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mom/engorgement.html

Also, this is a great FAQ on the poo front. Pretty visual  ;) http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=159015.0

Finally, what's your EASY looking like for feeds right now? How frequent are the feeds and how is the engorgement now?

Sorry, so many questions

Charlotte
