what do you do when lo refuses a main course?
« on: December 12, 2009, 18:57:24 pm »
Hello All,

DS is very picky, but I m not giving up!  ;) Every day I cook and try to give him a variety so at one point he might just give in and actually would eat what I cook   ;D

So what he always would eat: fruits, bread and butter, meat ball, saucages, french frise, dessert stuff No veggies!
My big dilemma is whether to offer him what he would actually eat after he has refused what I cooked ?Would I not just make him always refuse because he would be "conditioned " that he would always get his favorite? At the same time I just cant leave him hungr y can I? Not just for being a good Mommy   :P but b/c then he does not nap and that is bad very bad

so what do you do?

THANKS!

How old is he?
Personally, I would not offer him only something I knew he was unlikely to eat. I would give him what he likes, along with something new, and encourage him to at least try the new food, but not make a fuss if he doesn't.
It is pretty normal for toddlers to like a pretty repetitive diet, and it looks like your DS does at least eat foods from all the main food groups!

If you are worried about him not eating veggies, you could try adding some to the meatball (like grated carrots or zucchini).  I agree with the PP, offer one new thing at a time with food that he likes.  You may have to offer it 10-20 times or more.  I usually cook 2 veggies as part of our dinner; one that I know my DD will eat, and one that is iffy, maybe she will try, maybe not.

A separate thing though - would he eat more veggies if offered as a snack?  DD will graze on raw cut up veggies for snack and I find that's a good way to introduce new things to her too.

Good luck!

I totally agree. If you always offer things he likes and also something iffy he shouldn't feel like he can hold out for what he likes and should become more comfortable trying what is being offered since it is all offered at the same time as part of one meal.

We've never really separated our veggies when we make foods so if we cook chicken with onions and mushrooms then that's what we offer DD. If I make an omelet with tomatoes, brocccoli, and cheese, then that's what DD gets. Sometimes when veggies are IN things they are less scary?
