sippy cup for milk in the new year?
« on: December 20, 2009, 15:39:24 pm »
Hi,
Henry will be 14 months at the end of December. We made the transition to cows milk easily just after his first birthday and I am thinking of going for a sippy cup for milk in the am. Just wondered how others did this.
At the moment it is actually a lovely part of our day as we have a cuddle on the sofa and he has his bottle when he gets up but I am guessing with a sippy it may be a bit different. What do you do if they are not interested? He has 8oz at the moment and I am not sure how I will get that much into a cup (!)
Any experiences to share would be great....thanks   becky x

Depends on the type of cup how much you can get into it...ours are the playtex starter cups with 2 handles and hold 7oz, 8 if you fill right to the top, but then it usually spills out as you try to get the lid on! I had also used Nuby soft spout ones when we first switched...they held 8 oz easily. I switched both my kids cold turkey onto sippy cups at around 5 -6 months of age, so not sure how to go about it with a toddler! Oh, and when we started with Spencer she still wanted a snuggle with her cup and me holding it for her (until she was almost 11 months old) so he might still want to do that.

We are also in the process of transitioning to a sippy cup as since my LO was ill a few weeks back, she went off milk from a bottle.  We started just giving her a cup of cows milk once she was up and gave breakfast earlier and letting her drink her milk with breakfast.  So far the most she has taken is 3.5 oz  :-\.  So we basically dropped the am bottle and now give milk with breakfast and dinner instead.  Im keeping the pm bottle though as that is cuddle time and a chance to get her to drink plenty of milk (shes fine with a bottle now she is not ill).

So Im going to follow along to get some ideas too  :P

Sabs - I really struggle too.  I hear everyone else saying their LOs take 7oz from the sippy but DD only takes a few sips then points to her water  ::).  Im not too bothered at the moment as she I can get lots of milk in her food and her last bottle is OK but I wish she could take more so I didnt need to worry!! One day she had 3.5 oz over an hour and I thought maybe she was getting used to it but its been about a week now and still only sips!!  I dont know whether to go back to 2 bottles again to get her to take more milk now that she is over her chest infection.

I wish I knew the answer.  Hopefully, someone will respond.  The only thing I can think of is trying a different sippy cup so she can distinguish one is for milk and one if water. HUGS

We are still transitioning to the sippy   :P

DD still gets milk 3x a day. One in the am, one after nap, one before bed. We've transitioned all but the bedtime one, and I plan to transition that one soon, after the holidays.

It has been a slow process for us!

One thing I've found is it helps to "serve" her the sippy just like I did the bottle.  Warmed, and all snug on my lap. I found she just wanted to eat real food in the high chair, so it didn't work to try and give it to her there! I tried to think of ways to make it exactly the same as it was for the bottle, with the only difference being it was in a sippy cup.

Following this thread, too.  Clay turned a year old last week and only takes two bottles of formula a day.  Pedi said it's time to switch to cow's.

Clay has successfully been drinking a few sips of water out of a sippy cup, and it took us a few kinds until we found one he liked.  Yesterday I put some milk in it and he immediately spit it out.  Today he's pushed it away every time.  He even gagged at the milk.  I was curious to see if it was the milk he didn't like or the sippy cup, so I put a little in his bottle.  He sucked it down.  So, what's more important?  Getting him to drink milk or getting him off the bottle?
God will give you exactly what you ask Him for, even if it's not in the package you expected it to be in.

i have tried serving the milk warm but that didn't work. I even tried to serve it while she was in my arms.  I am going to try my lap next. I do have to admit, I have not been consistent.
