« on: February 06, 2010, 18:16:30 pm »
Maisie is ok with finger food (well I say she is good with finger food I am not sure how much she eats) but if I am feeding her and it has lumps in she is sick, and well weetabix she just gags and is sick. Not sure what to do about it, any ideas?

Thanks Donna x

As in she gags and throws up?  Spencer has a wicked gag reflex, but it was more with toast and dry things that she would try to stuff her mouth full of than lumps. Masyn however has never been able to eat any kind of oatmeal or porridge that is lumpy, she immeadiatly gags and throws up. What sort of finger food will she eat? Around that age we started letting them self feed with their hands, things like pasta, rice, meat, well cooked veggies, fruit.

For the time being I would avoid giving her too many lumps if she is having such a hard time with them.  I have a friend who couldn't give her ds lumps until he was over a year because he would gag on them, throw up and then refuse to eat.  He was able to eat finger food as well, so I have no idea why it was such a problem with purees with lumps.  He is now 3 and has no problems eating (beyond being 3! ;D) so it is clearly not an ongoing issue.

Thanks for the quick response
She loves toast some mornings it’s the only thing she will eat, but she also likes ham, cucumber, kiwi, all veg, rice cakes well most things. Like I said not sure how much she eats, think she might do a lot of just chewing and spitting out but I give her finger food every meal just to keep her trying to get them.

It good to know that she is not the only one who has done  ;)

Thanks x

we had the same problem until dd was over a year old.  i just gave finger food and then any puree i was giving her would be very smooth - no lumps.  then she just went to all finger food and it has not been a problem since.

Thanks for posting this question...I'm having kind of the same problem with DS.  If anything besides a puree hits his throat, he gags and throws up.  He's not upset by it, but I just feel like it's frustrating our attempts to get him on something other than purees.  For example, the other night, he had the smallest of the smallest sliver of carrot...and threw up half his bottle.  I know he WANTS to do finger foods, but I'm afraid he's going to throw up ALL of his formula :(  So, good to know that he's not so abnormal as I was worried that he was.

No it looks like there is a few of them around  ::). Maisie is the same in that it does not really bother her but she will just not eat anything from that moment as if to say " not doing that again"
