When did your lo drop the last nap?
« on: February 12, 2010, 19:04:49 pm »
Hi - I've looked through the previous threads but I can't seem to find an answer.

My girls will be 2 in a few weeks and we've recently gone through the crib/big girl bed switch. We had quite a few hiccups along the way but I started WI/WO faithfully this past Monday and the girls are now sleeping from 7pm (6:30 bedtime and winddown) until 6:45 ish in the morning. So they're getting almost 12 hours, plus 1 hour of napping on a normal day and they've been happy, eating well and so forth.

Developmentally, a million things have been going on in the past month. Speech, the 'twos', climbing, jumping, counting, and a massive growth spurt etc. There's literally something new every day now. Some second set molar issues but nothing compared to the canines.

Today there was no nap. They had a wonderful sleep last night with only one NW and it was settled within 30 seconds of me going in and leaving again. I took them up to nap and it just didn't happen. They lay on their beds with their waves cd on but nothing happened. I kept peeking in and they were just staring at the ceiling or kicking their legs up in the air. They know they're not allowed up and they stayed there for 1/2 hour but no sleep. Just the odd giggle and playing with their teddy. This was 3 hours ago and they seem fine albeit a little on the tired side. No more outbursts or tantrums than normal (they're spirited and are in the 'twos'), and their normal bedtime is in 3.5 hours.

My question is - is that isn't this quite young to drop the last nap? When I clued in that they were spirited, I had hoped for naps until they were at least 3 because of how much energy they expend. I'm still going to make them lay down for 1/2 hour every day for quiet time but am I headed for disaster by dropping this nap?

Any insight anyone?

Do you mean when do kids stop napping altogether?  My stepdaughter stopped napping this year when she turned 5 and went into a pre-k room.  Prior to that, she was in a daycare/preschool. They had naptime every day for the 4 year olds and my SD usually slept from 1-3.  Pretty much all the kids slept for about 2-3 hours.

I would not give up the nap for a 2 year old. They really need their sleep.  Even if they don't nap, I would make sure you put them in their room for naptime. I would give them at least 1 hour quiet time alone. Hopefully they will sleep eventually--maybe not the first few times, but eventually if you are consistent about the alone time. Are you putting them in the same room for naptime? if you are, maybe try splitting them up.

They unfortunately won't settle unless they're together :( We are definitely going to keep up with the quiet time for 1 hr every day and hopefully they will sleep but unfortunately I can't will it in them lol. Today went fairly well without the nap, but I'm still waiting to see how tonight goes overall. I'm guessing I'll either have an extremely early morning or the same 7am wake up as usual. They just laid there and stared at the ceiling for 1/2 hour and it looked like they were trying to get to sleep just not sleepy. The other 1/2 hour I made them stay and get rest but they were the typical spirited girls that they are and giggled for the other 1/2 hour. The time away from their toys was good down time for them and helped them recharge I think.

We're very routine in my house (you really have to be with these two), so I'll just keep taking them up after lunch and hope that if they need sleep they take some. I make them be quiet best I can for each other so they're not disruptive to the others' sleep needs and now that language is developing hopefully me explaining to them (in simple terms) to be quiet will eventually sink in.
