10 mnth old not interested in finger food - any ideas??
« on: February 05, 2010, 12:38:06 pm »
hi
my 10 1/2 month old is not interested in finger food at all. she'll chew on anything she finds lying on the floor - toys, wires, books, remote controls etc but when i put a carrot or a banana or any piece of finger food in front of her on the table she'll pick it up and then just throw it on the floor. if she does actually put it to her mouth, she usually spits it out. i'm getting really frustrated as i remember my now 3.5 yr old being so easy at this stage and i'm really not sure where to go from here. any advice would be great or ideas on how to make finger food more interesting.
thanks in advance

My LO was the same. Just keep offering. Different sizes and shapes, different colours. Blueberries were the breakthrough for us, he thought they were sweeties, and went from there to eating anything cut to blueberry size. And only put a couple of little bits on the highchair tray, that way there won't be so much clean up and it will be less frustrating.

Oh yes, another thing my LO liked was to have 3 tiny containers (maybe like muffin tin liners) with tiny bits in - a few tiny cubes of cheese, a few blueberries, a few peas.

My LO had no interest at first either.  Every new change was hard for us.  I just kept offering different foods.  I would feed him a little and then put things on his tray.  If he didn't eat any of them, I would feed him a little more.  I don't remember what the breakthrough food was for us.  I know breads have always been easy with him, but at that age, I don't think that is what it was.

Now she's 10 months my little one wants to eat tiny pieces of food, but before that the bigger the better. Have you tried giving yours something massive (like a slice of bread) just to see what they do?
Our beautiful daughter was born on 24th March 2009. We feel very blessed.

still no luck. she's just not interested - tried blueberries, peas, banana - she just doesn't really know what to do with it and ends up throwing it on the floor.

All you can do is keep offering. Also try giving her a fork so she can learn to stab bits. The older she gets the more she'll desire to be independent and feed herself.

What about if you're eating something?  If you're eating a banana perhaps you could offer her a 'bite'.  Same with a piece of bread or toast.  It's a trick I use if I was DS to try something new!!  Then you can put a 'bit' on her highchair tray for her to eat herself.

If I have a bite of something and then look and hold it out to him saying something like 'Oh, do you want a bite of Mummy's ______?'  He'll generally always at least try it. (not always keep it in mind!)

He is older than your LO, but he's been happily stealing my food since about 10 months!!!!
