14 mo refusing naps
« on: June 25, 2010, 14:49:54 pm »
In the last week my 14 mo son has not been falling asleep for his naps. I'm guessing that means its time to tweak his schedule a bit. The thing is that i also have a 3 yr old who is still taking a nap and we have been having a hard time with sleep for her to.  So for her i know that she needs to have her nap from around 1-2:30 or i could maybe push it to 1:30-3:00 but not sleeping later than 3.  I know its not ideal for my 14 mo but i have to play around with his naps so that they nap at the same time. (otherwise we would be home all day with napping kids and no break for mommy!)

His day generally looks like something like this:
around 7:00-7:30 wake up
around 9:45-10:00-go down for nap. i only let him sleep for about 45 min so that his next awake time is around 3 hrs and so that his long nap will be at the same time as his big sis.
10:45 wake up
1:45-sleep usually until around 4 or 4:30
4-4:30 awake
7:15 sleep

so what can do so that he will go down for naps? can i switch him to only one nap a day and maybe put him down around 12:30? i know its a little tricky trying coordinate both schedules so that it works somewhat for both of them.

thank you so much!

You could try one nap a day, i know there are plenty of lo's who have made the switch at this age. My advice would be to shorten the am nap to half an hour and see if that helps first. the danger with this transition is going too fast too soon and ending up with OT.
The first A time is quite short at his age. I would aim for more like 3.5 hours, then a half hour nap and then he should still go down around the same time as your DD.
A - 7am
S - 10.30-11am
S - 2-whenever
Bed - 7.15pm
How about that?

so today i tried to give him only one nap (we had to go out in the morning anyway).  i'm not sure what time he woke up this morning. for sure he woke up at 6. i gave him a bottle and put him back in bed. not sure if he fell back asleep but by 6:50 he was not happy in bed anymore so i took him out. put him down for a nap at about 12:15 (as soon as we came home) and he slept until about 2:50.
what time should i put him to sleep for the night?

Normally I would not advise less than 5 hours A after a nap that length so maybe try about 7.45pm?
