Pu/pd for 14 month old??
« on: February 12, 2010, 16:11:14 pm »
Hi

I have had success with pu/pd in the past but in the past 2 months my DD has been sick/travelling/changes.  I have also stopped BF except at night.  It is just easier to BF back to sleep but I'm still not getting more than 4 consecutive hours. Will pu/pd work at this age?

7-8 wakes
E breakfast - fruit and cereal
E 11:30 snack
S 12-1:30 nap
E 1:30 cup of whole milk (barely goes down) and lunch
S 4:00 sometimes a quick nap (phasing out of this)
E 6:00 dinner few bites here and there
S 7:00-8:00 bed

She goes down easily with routine of bath, book, rock and out.  However she now gets up every 3-4 hours. I bF and she's down again.  Sometimes I get tired and just bring her back in bed. At that time, she falls asleep as soon as I pat (no feed).  She used to sttn but things have been different the past few months. I want to stop bf at night and get more consecutive sleep.  Is this possible??

By this age, many LO's find pu/pd too stimulating and folks tend to have more success with wi/wo described here:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80750.0

Thanks. Which method is better?  Wi/wo or gradual?  I feel like letting her cry is the very problem for me.  But I'll try what u tell me.

Which is better just really depends on your temperament and LO's temperament.  Wi/wo works better for my LOs and I, but there does tend to be more crying with wi/wo, which I'm okay with.  Gradual withdrawal tends to take longer but there is generally less crying.

Personally, I would find the crying associated with going from BFing back to sleep straight to WIWO too much.  But everyone is different, and it really depends on your LO.

If it were me, I would probably start with a bit more of a gradual approach - i.e. do you have a DH or partner who could try to cuddle back to sleep for a few days to break the BFing association, and then maybe move from cuddling to sleep, to just soothing in the cot, to moving a bit further away, and then maybe WIWO once she's closer to independent sleep?
