How do you make you LO's food?
« on: February 14, 2010, 20:07:56 pm »
Hi,

We have been using store bought baby food but would like to start making our own for our 8 month DS.  This seems like a silly question to ask, but how do you make yours?  In a steamer? Oven? a different way?  Does everything need to be cooked or can soft things like bananas just be mashed?

Thank you!

At 8 months you could give a lot of it as finger foods i.e. pieces of soft fruit, veg, toast, pasta, etc.  You could give what the rest of the family is having as long as it isnt too salty or spicy.

Thanks.  I mashed up bananas the other day and gave it as finger food.  As soon as he got some in his mouth he started gagging and threw up.  I'm guessing I need to go a bit slower for him.  Perhaps mashing it up more would have helped but I thought I had mashed it quite a bit.  He LOVES the baby food bananas we have been feeding him.  Has anyone else had this problem?

you dont need to mash banana to give as finger food - break a chunk off and let him hold it himself.  They do gag and they sometimes throw up but that is how they learn to cope with food in their mouth.  I gave finger foods alongside purees so ds could practice feeding himself while he got spoonfed at the same time.  Mashed banana can be a bit gloopy - you could try thinning it with a little water or milk.

Does it need to be a small piece or is a big piece better?  I was worried that he could choke.   Can you tell it is our first? ::)

Thanks for the advice.

I totally understand! I was exactly the same way with my DS when I started him on finger foods. Now he eats everything the same as we eat! So I usually just give him bit sized pieces of the foods. Sometimes I cook his food a little bit longer then our food to make it softer. At first, he gagged and spat it back out but now he is fine with it. You can also just mash it up and give it too him on a spoon if he isn't liking the texture. Adding a little bit of water to the foods will change the texture so you can introduce it too him more gradually. Lots of people give spears of food like sweet potato or something. I have always just used bit sized pieces but I am sure either works. Good luck!
