10.5 hr nights and EW (OT/UT ?????)
« on: February 21, 2010, 20:37:22 pm »
Hey all,

Back again.  My lo is 17mnths and i am pretty cetain she is a low sleep needs child !!  She has been on one nap since about 13 mnths i think.  She started by only sleeping 1.5 hr in day but mde it up at night doing close to 12hrs.  After a coupel of months her naps extended 2 hrs (on non creche days !!) and her nighs were fairly much 11 hrs.  The 2 hr nap joy seemed to only last a a couple of months and since she turned 17 mnths she has reduced her nap back to 1.5 hrs but is not making it up at night.  She is now doing mostly 10.5hr nights.  That is only 12 hrs in 24 !!!  As a result she is now waking up before six (peviously 6:30 which i can cope with ).  A couple of times its en 5:30 !!!!

I suppose what im asking is for her age do yo think this is ok ! Are nights shorter than 11 hrs significant to indicate OT or UT ?  Also how can i make her wake up time a little more parent friendly.  Im pregnant and unfortunately working full time.  In addition my DH works much of the week away from home and im exhausetd !!!

Here is a typical day:

A= 5:50
S= 12:30/ 1:00- 2:00/2:30  (have tried bringing nap forward length doesn't vary then even earlier bed and earlier wake up)
S= 7:00/7:30-  5:30/5:50

Seems ages since we made i past six.  Of note lo is extremely active walking at 10.5 mnths and has bags of energy.  Anyone any pearls of wisdom that might help or do i just need to accept shorter nights.

Thanks for reading,
x

Hi kitty, I'm following along with your thread. My DD is 17.5 months old and recently I"ve noiced she also has started doing the similar thing to your lo. Our 2hr 1-nap day routine which was great for about 1.5 months is also getting a bit wonky now.

On an ideal day our routine is:

Wake up - 6:30
nap - 12 - 2:15ish
bedtime - 7:30

We had a few odd days last week where she would only sleep for 1.5hr at nap time so when I put her to bed earlier (like say 6:45 or so) she would wake up at 5:30/5:45 the next day:(

I'm curious also to hear what others say.

Hope you get a sleep in tonight! Isn't it always something with our LO's? You think you've made it to 1 nap and breath a sigh of relief and then BAM something else changes!! :)

Hate to say this but they do cut back on sleep at 18mths!  Also there are a lot of bubs who seem to go through a real wonky phase at this age too.

You might find that 11hr nights and 1.5hr naps are all you're gonna get and you just need to try and get a good balance of A times which works.

I think you are probably going to have to push the nap back a bit to be able to give you a nearer 7.30pm bed so you can have a later wake up.

We get 10.5hr nights with either OT or UT and I think it depends on your LO. - sorry that's not much help is it!  How is she during the day and when she wakes?

Thanks guys it is always comforting to know some-one is listening.

Shersmummy i definately agree with you you think you have it sorted and before you can give yourself a tap on the back the tables are turned again. !!

Babybarr 1.5 hr nap and 11hr night would be ideal.  I guess i just need to find the right time for the nap.  A wake up time of 6:30 would be way more civilised.  Its the 10.5hr nights that throw me.

Lo always seems relatively happy but her going to bed seems a little longer and unsettled with the shorter total sleep.  Unfortunately with work the earliest realistic bedtime is 7:00.  So if a bad nap day like today (creche and 40m !!!!)  an early bedtime is just not possible.  So seriously hoping tonight goes ok.

On a positive note i have asked for a sleeper for the next one !!!  Fingers are well and ruely crossed. x

Kitty30 do you think your LO is OT?  Also are there any teeth coming through?

We had another 10.5hr night last night :(

she was up at 6 Am but I put her down for the nap only at 12 as usual. I tend to mostly do fixed nap and bedtimes.

She slept exactly from 12 - 2 and woke up herself. I put her to bed at 7 and she fell asleep at 7:20. Wonder what kind of night we'll have tonight. I am hoping the longer A time this morning before the nap will make her wake up a bit later in the morning.

How does she wake in the morning?  Is she happy or "grumpy"?

Hello,

I'm jumping on here as we've had similar issues recently. If she is low sleep needs I am guessing she is UT. My DS is low sleep needs too and at just turned 2 we are lucky if we get 12 hours' sleep in 24. If he has too good a night he refuses his nap!! Last night he slept 20.10-05.45 and seems fine on it.

If she is generally happy you could try what has worked for us - move bedtime back to 7.30ish in small increments. It might not suit you, but it has helped us as a family as we can now go out more at weekends and not worry about bedtime being too stretched.

Thanks everyone for all the eyes.

I just cannot work the OT/UT out with lo.  She always wakes crying unless she sleeps for 11hrs or more which these days is a rareity.  I dont get her up untill 6:30 i try to shh her on the monitor but she just cries on and off.  Once she gets her milk i can leave her in the cot for at least 15/20m with a book and she is happy enough.  I know she is not hungry as she eats well and never finishes the am bottle.   I think i could accept it more if she woke and was happy to stay in bed.  I think my instinct tell me OT but  just cannot extend her nap.

We do more or less set nap times of between 12:30/1:00 irrelevant of waking time.  Have tried earlier nap times with little joy.

Lo is def teething she is a late teether with her first molars breaking.  So many left to go !!  Could these be causing EW ?  I have tied meds before naps but has not changed anything.

We tried 7:30 bedtime for a week but she woke at same time so this week its 7:00-7:15.  So far one excellent night slept 11hrs the other two 5:45 a piece !!

Read some suff last night .  How i can't believe that my lo should without exception be sleeping 2hrs in day and 11-12 + a night !!!!  And she should just do it NATURALLY !!

If i i teething does this mean it just like this untill all are through.  If so im very demoralised.

Wow shresmummy what a great nap.  Fingers crossed for tonight.xx
