Constipation
« on: March 15, 2010, 21:24:14 pm »
hi everyone,

I have a 5 mo EBF DD. we were going to wait until 6 mo to start solids but she would drool and 'fake chew' everytime we would put something in our mouths. When she started reaching for my food we decided it was time. I started with a little bit of rice cereal and that was 12 days ago. She has not poo'ed since!!! The GP recommended switching to oatmeal and adding a bit of prunes. Still no go. On Friday I gave her 2 supp as recommended by my GP. no go. I just gave her another one now. I don't want to introduce another food as we really were just starting off but I know she has to be uncomfortable. She is not too fussy but SUPER gassy and starting to have reflux issues. I have not given her any solids since Friday.

She did have a bout of constipation once before around 4 months that lasted 10 days. She was not on solids then and everything worked itself out naturally. I am just wondering if I should be aggressive here or if there is something else I can do.

I also am massaging her tummy, warm bath, and I took her temperature (IYKWIM)

Thanks

meg

Hello Meg!
We had this problem last week. Poor DS hadn't been for 4 days and was crying when trying to pass stools :'(
On day 4, I decided not to give any solids but just to BF him all day.
We also gave some boiled water. I think this helped as in that afternoon he did eventually go (DH helped ease the poo out with some tweezers :o)
From then on I give pureed pear in the afternoon and this helps keep him regular!
Banana was def the clogging culprit for us ;)

HTHs a little!

I would cut out the cereals altogether for the time being.  Just keep feeding, giving cooled boiled water in between feeds - my sister is a paed nurse and they give their prem babies cooled boiled water with a tiny bit of fresh apple juice for constipation, as it is gentle on their systems.  If you want to give solids just stick with the pears for now.  Also, my sis advised that we didn't go overboard on the prunes with DS as they can give a tummy ache - but a little bit of prune juice in water is good.

xx

Good advice from all the ladies. We give ds strained pears regularly as I find it helps, and ditto on the bananas, ds was somewhat constipated from them too and I've read of lots of los with this problem!

me again. We're day 14 now. Still no poo. She has really smelly gas! Still doesn't seem fussy but is not napping well. I've tried the pears with water for 2 days, I've also given her watered down apple/prune juice and then straight prunes last night. Why won't my DD go?

The GP still isn't concerned, told me that some EBF babies just do this---I just think it's odd that she is doing this only after starting solids. Maybe it is a coincidence but I just think she's really backed up! Has anyone else had this happen for 14 days?

Rice cereal is recommended by paeds, but my dd chocked, gagged and cried after eating it. It caused my lo to be constipated but she was in pain. We tried prunes and prune juice as well  and continued with her probiotics.

I'm sure you've tried this, but sometimes having them sit in a warm bath can help get things moving.

*hugs* I think you're really doing everything you can. I hope she goes soon...

I drew the warm bath and was all ready to go and she had a mini-poo while I was undressing her. Hopefully the warm bath will do the rest of the trick...but I feel better now knowing that at least things are moving! :)

thanks for everyone's help!

I. Hate. Rice. Cereal.   >:(

Hope that little ball was what was keeping things from moving.  I'd give her a tablespoon of prunes mixed with a tablespoon of pears tomorrow.  Sorry hun!!!!!

Hey - I understand exactly what you are going through.  My dd has been on solids for a few weeks now and got really constipated just over a week ago.  I think she only went a few days without a poo, but then we had at least a week with wee solid poos.  I stopped the baby rice, fed her prunes on two consecutive evenings (Monday & Tuesday), with swede, parsnips and some broccoli for lunch (cutting out carrots, apple, butternut squash).  It was yesterday (Thursday) that we finally saw the explosion.  So, don't worry if nothing happens right away - it will happen eventually!
I am now going to reintroduce different solids and watch out for the ones that cause constipation!

My ds was worse than this.  He had bowel problems from birth (and was breastfed) and he would go a couple of weeks without pooing.  When it did happen, it was something to see!  We knew when it was about to happen as he got very fussy.

Good luck

Ok! we went 15 days and then had an explosion at 1:30 AM! I was so excited I wanted to wake up everyone in the house (and we had company over)...but I didn't. It really was amazing and I know she FEELS better!

thanks for everyone's advice---the prune/pear combo must have done the trick. :)
