15 mo Bottle routine Questions
« on: April 06, 2010, 06:57:07 am »
I've been trying to find a post to do with milk and bottles and this is the closest I can find without starting a new one.  My DS is 15 months and is following this "routine"...

Breakfast
Bottle (formula around 7oz)
Nap (1 and half hours)
Lunch
Bottle (formula around 7oz)
Nap (1 hour)
Dinner
Bottle (formual around 7oz)
Bed

Does this seem about right for a 15 month old?  He has snacks between meals, but should he still be having so much milk?  When should he cut down to 2 bottles?  Am I lucky for him to be having 2 good naps or should he be on just 1 by now?

Any advice would be great.

Both my lo's were down to 2 milk feeds by 10 1/2 months - am and pm.  You could try cutting the daytime feed and sustituting it with a snack and drink of water.

Re: naps, if the 2 naps are working for you and your lo then keep on with them.  If your lo is waking earlier in the morning/has difficulty settling then try cutting the naps down

Yeh, that's quite a lot of bottles for 15 months old. I'd probably only give am and pm. How is his solids intake, does he eat well? Re his naps, if he's sleeping well then there's no need to change anything!

Thanks for the info ladies.  I'll try cutting the middle bottle feed today and see how he does.  He generally eats well...

Breakfast - fruit and a full weetabix or toast
Lunch - sandwich or pasta or somthing else followed by yoghurt or fruit
Dinner - lots of vegetables (he just loves carrots and broccoli) fish or someother form of protein.  We generally let him eat until he refuses i.e. when he is full.

Next question... when did your LO start taking their milk from a sippy cup instead of a bottle?  My DS drinks water independently from his sippy cup and the last 2 days I've tried giving him milk but as soon as he drinks and realises it's not water he refuses it.  Don't want to persist for too long as I don't want him to start refusing his sippy cup in fear of it being milk and not water.

Oh the problems eh!

My little guy still has 3 bottles a day with daycare, only two with me usually as I am a bit more persistent with other foods and his water to fill him up mid-day.  I haven't tried milk in the sippy yet because I'm still mixing in a bit of formula.  Maybe try a different sippy cup, one unique just for the milk.  Only for the afternoon -- offer it but don't push it, sort of leave it around for him to find and drink (not too long since its milk lol).

I agree with the sleep, don't fix what is not broken.  Should he start to be a challenge to get down for two naps or if his night sleep starts to suffer then consider adjusting.

Good luck!

Stan wouldn't have milk from a free-flow sippy but I got him one with a valve (so you have to suck it more like a bottle) and that worked.

yes after advice from Anna :) we use the Amadeus Cow cup. I started in the am and some days he would not drink it but over time he realised there was no other option and he loves his milk. Once that was established we did the same for bedtime. Because he was used to the cup this transition was easier.
I would think that 2 bottles/sippy cups a day would be plenty.
