how old should LO be when you cut out night feed?
« on: April 19, 2010, 16:05:51 pm »
Hi my Lo in 4 months is on 4/4 EASY. Now up until last week everything was going fine, she would have her DF at 10:30 pm and sleep until 4:30-5 am have 4 oz then sleep until 7:30 then eat at 8:30. We adjusted her EASY for this and it was working great. Now she's getting up at 2:30- 3 am having 4 oz then sleeping till 7:30 and having a bottle right away. We have tired giving her more on her DF but she will not take more than 6 oz on a good night ( 4 oz on a bad). We have also started today putting 1 more once in her bottles( going from 6 oz to 7 oz). As of now she eats between 28-30 oz a day and is a big baby( 15 pounds). My questions are:
At what age will she be able to go from 10:30pm to 7:30am without needing a bottle?
Also is she waking because she hungry or habit at this age?
If we up her calories during the day will she sleep the whole night?

In theory more day time calories should mean a better chance at sleeping through but in practice there is a developmental aspect to sleeping through too. If she is waking through habit then you should be able to re-settle her with whatever method you use, but if she wakes again soon then it probably is hunger.

At 4 months a night feed is quite normal and if she is resettling quickly a feed at 2.30 then wake at 7.30 is good. I don't think there is a set age for going that long stretch - some babies manage it quite young but others (like mine ::)) take a lot longer. There is a big growth spurt around 4 months too - has she been through this yet?

Lo went through a major growth spurt about 2 weeks ago. Also we gave her a 7 oz bottle an hour ago and she drained it in 4 minutes !!! we'll keep giving her 7 oz today and see how tonight goes. We also started using fast flow nipples for day feeds and she isn't really burping after, no gas though but only 2 or 3 tiny burps, is this normal?

If you are burping her well (or trying too!) and she is not gassy I'm sure it's fine! Some bottles are better at eliminating air than others so maybe the bottle type you use is helping too!

See how she goes on the 7oz bottles for a few days, if she is draining all/ the majority of her bottles I would increase them by 1oz again.

Lo ate 7 oz bottles all day and drank them all dry , she even ate a 9 oz bottle after her long afternoon nap. So when she woke up at 3 am we just gave her a paci and she went back to sleep, and at 5:40 am she drained the bottle and went back to sleep till 7:20( i swear she has a little alarm in her head so get up right at 7:20 everyday lol) So do you think i should move her bottles up to 8 ozs and see if she drinks those dry?

I would and see how she goes! The advice I've always been given is that there should be enough in the bottle so they can stop because they are full and not because the bottle is empty. If she isn't spitting/ vomititng the feed back up afterwards she can handle the amount she is taking. It may be that she is going through another bit of a growth spurt so you may find after a few days she stops taking the full bottles and you can drop them back an oz - or she just likes her milk!

She did well re-settling with the paci! Tell me about alarm clock babies - my DD seems to be set for 5.50 at the moment, I think she needs adjusting!

Good luck tonight!

Great advice, when she gets up i'll make her an 8 oz bottle and see how it goes for the day :)
