1 Year old nap time confusion
« on: May 05, 2010, 16:51:12 pm »
Hey, we've had a few weeks of nasty illness here with little one suffering from scarlet fever and taking her time to recover. She was a brilliant nap/sleeper prior to this, our day started at 7 or so and finished at 7 with a good 2 hour nap in the morning from 10 and then another 1 hour nap around 3. The afternoon nap had started to go a bit wonky and I was struggling to get her to sleep for long on that nap. Now she's refusing it completely and is very ot tired by bedtime. The last couple of days we've also had 6 am wake ups which is not good! I think it's as a result of her being ill (or is this 2-1 starting?). Any ideas for a good schedule for us to try out?

I found around this age I had to switch (actually even earlier than 12 months) over to the short morning nap and longer afternoon nap or my DD would NOT take an afternoon nap any longer.

You can try that OR if you always get such a nice good long morning nap, you can try to push it out a bit later and at the same time push and also cut the afternoon nap. Again, I found that 3 hours of naps began to be too much for DD at this time, so cut to 2.75, then 2.5, then 2.25, then 2, by trimming one of her naps. We trimmed the morning until it was gone and we just eventually had one around noon.

One idea is:

7-wake
10:30-12:30-nap
4:30-5:15-nap
7/7:30-bed (or something like that)

We did something like:
7-wake
10-nap (cut shorter over a period of time, stopped for awhile on 10-10:30ish)
1-3ish-nap (slowly moved later until I cut the morning out)
7-bed

It was a lot of trial and error...esp. figuring out A time after a cut nap and A time before bed. As she got older, A times grew and bedtimes got later and later to fit all the napping she needed in one day before she could handle just one nap.

It's no fun.

thank you! morning nap is usually lovely and long so will try pushing that a bit later and going for a late snooze in the pm. Today was so horrible as she woke at 11.30 this morning and wouldn't sleep this pm so was a grumpy monkey by the afternoon. It's always these kind of days whereby I end up running to the BW forum wailing for help!

Will give it a go and also go look at the 2:1 stuff.

I found it very helpful when trying to tweak here and tweak there....to chat with other moms going through it at the same time. :)
