Dilemma... naps at daycare
« on: May 03, 2010, 19:18:58 pm »
I'm kind of conflicted here. Stan has been at his nursery since he was six months old and is very very happy there. Some time around when he turns 3 he will move up from the 'infant community' to the 'Montessori school'. I've just found out that they DON'T HAVE A NAP at the school??!?! This is baffling to me?! Now admittedly Stan only takes 1hr-1hr20 at nursery, but he really needs it, and is shattered in the evening and goes to bed earlier on nursery days than on other days. He is average to high sleep needs and I just can't see him being ready to drop his nap at 3?

Of course, I have no idea what the situation is in six months time BUT if I decide I care enough about this to move him - I need to start making arrangements. On the one hand, I am cross that they don't have any provision, even for children who still need a nap. On the other hand, as I've said, he's really happy and settled there, and until now I had no thought of moving him.

Ds1 used to take a 2-3 hour nap at 2.5 and I remember thinking that it would be ages before he dropped it. Then he moved to the kindy section of childcare at 3.25 where they offered a nap but lots of kids didn't take it. He quickly realised he didn't need to nap and jsut dropped it like that! I just offered a nap on the at home days and he sometiems took one, sometimes not. Things can change a lot in those 7 months!

Do they at least have a "rest" or quiet period after lunch?

I was going to ask about a "rest" period. If he is totally shattered and miserable would they consider allowing him a rest period in the nurse's office or some such???

I know most pre-school aged classes around here offer naps or are only half day for the sole purpose of allowing students to nap or have a relaxing time in their day. Most 3-4 year olds need to rest or nap and are shattered after a full day without one.

If you think he'll really need it is there a way to have him only attend half day so he can nap at home or with you or a nanny/sitter? That way he gets to stay at that center but still gets his sleep?

Does seem strange to me that they won't offer it at all. I'd ask if he could stay in the 2 year old toddler program side until later but then he'd miss out on age appropriate experiences and interactions so that wouldn't be helpful.

Maybe they could send him down to the 2 year old room to nap and then come back to the Montesorri area???

Aren't they all about doing what parents want/pay for and accomodating children's needs??????

Offer suggestions and see what response you get from them.

I work with 2.5 to 3.5 yr olds, have around 16 of them staying in my room for nap and afternoons....
there is a huge difference between a 2.5 yr old and a 3yr old or definately a 3.25+ for napping YES - right now, kids that would fall asleep once their heads hit the pillow at 1pm for 1.5 hr nap at 2.5 or even nearly 3 and are now 3.5+ are just having to leave the room while we settle the smaller ones.....

BUT - yes, we take into account the kids needs, moods, OTd days (help us, today after the long weekend every single one of them was cranky and OTd) and what the parents want.

Some parents think 3 is a magic age - My child just had their birthday, no naps now thank you....UGH! And others, more in tune with their kids, say Well my kid is up until 9 or 10pm, please curtail the nap to 45 mins at most etc etc....

Oscar began dropping the nap at 2 yrs 9 mths but with wicked EWs again last summer he was still napping 5 out of 7 at 3 yrs 3mths...

In his nursery group (the next one up from mine) they haven't even bothered with rest time since Christmas which reall irks me....one of my biggest issues right now with Oz is all down to a lack of downtime after lunch.....when I manage nursery (did 3-4s for the past 6 yrs) I ALWAYS insist on downtime for these kids at least thro to May when most of them are 4-4.5 already....

hope you get to hear of a rest time being an option at least as this may be enough for Stan on his nursery days ....

S x
ps. how many days does he do? Oz at this age was doing Mon,Weds, Fri mornings only and napping in the pushchair and then from 2 yrs 8mths the same 3 days but 8.30am to 3pm so had three days no naps and 4 days with long (2 hr) naps to make up for it....

Oh, I know a lot can change. He'll probably be 2yrs10months when he moves up. I don't actually know if they have a quiet time after lunch, I'll have to ask.

This is what is so strange to me Nicole - since Stan was 5/6 months old they have been SO great and SO accommodating and SO flexible, giving him his naps whenever I ask for etc. I guess that is why I am so shocked that all of a sudden, when you go up to the 'school' part, BAM no naps whether you're ready or not! I can't quite get my head around it. Trouble is I am a real shy introverted type so I find it hard to say 'No I don't like this.' :(

He's there Weds Thurs Fri, long days (8.30am-5.30pm) :(

I am wondering if at this point you can ask them if they could see how he does when he first moves up and if he doesn't adapt well on such long days without a nap, if they would be willing to problem solve with you to come up with a solution. That way you're not saying, "NO, you really have to do this my way." but you are saying "Please help me do what is best for my child while he is in your care."
