When can I give fruit?
« on: May 22, 2010, 14:34:29 pm »
I was sure this was somewhere in the BW forum, but I can't seem to find it anywhere.

when is it safe to introduce fruits to my LO? My LO is a little over 7 months old.

I have some Stage 2 baby foods which has a combo of foods (pears and raspberries; and blueberries and apples). She's had pears and apples and been just fine BUT I'm worried about giving her the berries. Looking on a few websites there seems to be a difference between 'fresh fruit' and processed baby food as allergy triggers. The websites say that processed fruit is ok---and I'm wondering if that is true. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Don't know if you have seen this link http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/.  It is awesome.  It gives you a general idea about berries that are generally ok to give earlier (blueberries - 8 months) and those allergenic berries (strawberries - 12 months).  But of course any history of berry allergies, just wait until after a year.  Hope that helps!
Supposedly cooking the berries make them less "allergenic".

just chiming in...cooking or processed fruits are just easier to digest than giving it raw. I started giving my daughter a raw apple to suck on from 6 and half months.

Strawberries - it's bc of the seeds on the skin that can trigger an allergic reaction. You can always skin it off.

sticking with things like pears, peaches, prunes and other low risk fruits is always a safe bet if you're worried

Thanks for the website, I will check it out. I am mainly interested in giving her blueberries. One of the baby foods I bought has a pear and raspberry combo and the pears really help with her digestion. She's kind of turning a little orange from all of the orange foods I've been giving her so I was trying to branch out. I didn't even think of food allergies until I got home! (of course!)

Don't give papaya, despite Annabel Karmel saying it's an ideal first food - it is really hard to digest and both DS and a friend's LO had really sore bottoms with it :o(
