I'm just wondering how you all are setting up your cribs/bassinets?  I am breaking my back doing ssh/pat in my bassinet and it isn't better in the crib.  It seems like I need a place to scoot in my legs.  How do you pat, ssh, and shield the baby's eyes at the same time?  I'm finding myself so fatigued even when I am switching hands back and forth.  I was going to move his naps into the closet for complete darkness, but how would I see what I'm doing?

DS only needed a few minutes of shh/pat and then would drift off the rest of the way on his own.  So my back could handle that.  However, I did httj for every nap for ~40 minutes, so that's when I needed the help.  I brought a bench/vanity seat over to DS's crib.  I could lean over the railing while sitting up, use one hand/arm to shield his eyes and prop him up against and the other could pat him on the back.  My arms would get tired and sometimes fall asleep, but at least my back got a break.

Also, if need be, I would kneel by the crib and reach over that way.

HTH a bit...

Our crib side folds down so I do that and then sit on our glider ottoman.  Although I often have to stand also and I just go along doing that.  :P  Sorry that's not too much help.

I think it is hard to pat/shh and shield the eyes since we only have 2 hands!  The darker you can get the room the better so you won't need to shield as much.  We have aluminum foil on the nursery windows and it works like a charm.  I'm sure the neighbors think we're mad but oh well!

One thing I've found is when DS is on his tummy, I put my elbow on his bum and move my whole forearm up and down to pat.  Sounds funny but somehow using bigger arm muscles makes it easier.

Hope that helps some. :-*

I had one of our pub table chairs pulled up to the side of his crib.  But it was definitely back breaking.  So I feel for you.  We had to do it for almost every nap for several months.  Hugs!
The tweaking never stops!

A dining room chair next to the crib - still there at 22 months for the nights he can't settle or when he has an NW and needs a bit of calming.  I put the chair sideways, parallel to the crib, so that I was sitting at DS's head, facing the same direction he was when he was on his back. Then I could lean my arm in and pat that way. When that hand got tired I could turn in the chair or turn the whole chair the other way.
