WI/WO- guide me through this...
« on: May 20, 2010, 20:58:59 pm »
Hey Guys, My son Isaac is 14 months old, and is still nursing several times a night. I have been trying to cut down slowly, but with the sleep deprivation it is hard for me to keep from bringing him into our bed in the early morning. (i know, bad plan) but i am a million percent ready to get hi sleeping through the night again, and going to sleep independently. at one point he would watch his (glowing musical) toy by himself until he fell asleep at night, but that has stopped, and now i have been nursing him and then standing beside his crib until he goes to sleep. so i know he can do it, he just won't at this point. he is on one nap a day but normally only sleeps for about an hour, sometimes less. So mu question is this. do i need to go back to night wean him and go back to PD or can I skip strait to WI/WO? And are there any other things i should get in order before I try it? for instance, naps, etc.  Is it important at this age that they don't eat or nurse directly before naps? cause i know at one point they were supposed to have a time after a meal.  Hope someone can help me, I really need some sleep. He is WAY to old for this, and we would really like to start this weekend (so we can catch up during the day, and also we will be traveling next Saturday. is that too close? i just really need to get started!) Thanks so much!!!

Does he ever go to sleep independently, or do you nurse him to sleep for his nap and at bedtime? What is his routine like?

I have been nursing before nap and bedtime, and then putting him down awake. i think when his father gets him to sleep at night though, sometimes he uses shush/pat still... [:/]. i am not very good at the patience part of standing by his crib for an hour to get him to sleep so i normally let DH do it if it is taking a while... sometimes he still goes to sleep when we are out of the room. last night for instance, he did, but it took me going in to lay him back down and cove him, and then walking out, about 10 times. ( he will get up and jump and cry, and at this point there is no self settling about it.  He has never been the type of child to lay down and sleep anywhere he is, or ever go to sleep without me trying somehow) and then there are all those night wakes, and i can rarely get him back to sleep without nursing.  He normally wakes around 7ish, although today and yesterday it was more like 7:30 (but that will change drastically if i leave him in his crib all night) and nap is normally around 12:15ish. and he will sleep for about 45m-1h 15m. and i can hardly ever get him to go back down. and if the day is typical try to get him back down around 6:30ish.  and because he goes to bed so early, his dinner is normally pretty close to bed. i"m not sure if thats a problem. then we go potty, brush teeth, i give him a little lotion massage, pjs, nurse and then bed. I have tried doing his bath at night, but he is very spirited and it seems to get him way too excited.

I guess you need to decide if he is enough of an independent sleeper to use WIWO, or whether it is best to go with gradual withdrawal. Either way, you can expect a lot of crying, especially now that he is into his toddler years! There is no way to change a toddlers sleep habits without some fuss! There's some more info here on how to choose: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=80750.0
