Amazing sleeper went downhill at 4 months!
« on: June 07, 2010, 17:44:58 pm »
Hello! I thought I hit the jackpot when my little boy starting sleeping 8 hrs straight at 6 weeks old.  By 11 weeks old he was sleeping 12 hrs straight almost every night! Then 4 months hit and everything went downhill :o Now he's 5 months old and I consider it a good night when he wakes only once. :-[  On top of this, I have a husband who refuses to let Andrew cry at night...at all. To be fair he helps out with night wakings, but gets upset at me if I try any sleep training that involves crying. He thinks he's too young for that.

The worst part is that when he gets up, BFing isn't enough to get him back to sleep.  He'll be up for over an hour.  I already keep the lights off, don't talk or stimulate him and yet it still takes forever to get him to sleep.  Whether I let him cry in his crib (I usually stay beside him and rub his back), do pick-up/put-down, rock him, walk with him or lay next to him in the spare bed in his room, it still takes over an hour to get him back to sleep. He uses a soother and it helps him get to sleep, but he won't even accept it when he's crying.  Plus sometimes when he's half asleep he accidentally pulls it out and wakes himself up.

Other relevant info - he is breastfed and on solids 3 times/day. Sometimes I BFeed him to sleep, sometimes not (maybe 50% of the time). I BFeed on demand, which turns out to be around 5-6 time/day plus usually once at night. As far as his personality, I would say he's spirited with a bit of touchy thrown in.  He's an enthusiastic, but impatient eater (both with BM and solids), likes stimulation and is incredibly active for a baby who isn't mobile yet. The comments I get most when we've out in public (besides that he's beautiful ;)) is that he sure is "alert" and "active". The touchy side of him shows up when we're around lots of people, especially those who want to hold/touch him. He sometimes cries when other babies squeal or scream next to him and prefer to observe from my lap during a playdate until he warms up.

Here's his current schedule. It's approximate, since he doesn't wake up the same time every day (anywhere between 5am-8:30am ???)

Wakes between 5am-8:30am.
Morning nap @ 9:30 (1-2.5hrs)
Afternoon nap @ 2:00 (1-2.5hrs)
Bedtime @7:30pm

Any help would be appreciated!!

Looking at you schedule two naps is giving him very long Awake times for his age. Most babies at 5MO are taking 3 naps (two long and one catnap) and doing awake time between of 2hrs and 2 hrs 15mins or 30 max. Given this he may be OT which might lead to NW and EW. Have you seen the sample routines? http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=164029.0

It is common at 4MO that babes who have previously slept well start to have trouble sleeping and it can be developmental.

Is there any reason you started solids already? Have you been introducing new foods in the morning in case they upset his tummy?

He was having the evening catnap, but seems to have dropped it himself and stays awake from ~3:30pm-7:30pm. Even when I've put him down for a nap or gone for a car ride around 5 or 6, he doesn't fall asleep anymore.

The sleeping problems happened before I started feeding him solids. He started having sleeping problems at exactly 4 months old and I started solids just a week and a half ago.  Part of the reason I started them was to see if they would help him sleep better.  They didn't, but he is enjoying mealtimes so much I don't want to give it up now. He hasn't had any reactions or indigestion so far. For the first week I didn't give any solids in the evening out of worry that gas would keep him up, but this week I started giving him dinner and nothing has changed.

I should specify that I'm not having trouble (usually) getting him to bed at night. The problem is the waking up in the middle of the night.

Does he normally do 2.5hr naps or shorter or equally long and short? Just thinking sometimes if they take a long nap (>2hrs) they are so rested they can't sleep again soon but if they are little they can't handle the long A time they end up with. Also just because he won't take a nap it might be because he is OTand can't settle.

Since the routine you posted varies so much with wu and nap lengths can you post an actual day like today so we can see it more clearly?

My DS will also go down ok at BT when OT but then has NW and EW so it doesn't necessarily mean he isn't OT because he sleeps ok at BT.

His naps really vary, but I'd say they're an average of 1.5hrs long.  Very rarely less than an hour and very rarely more than 2.5 hrs.

Sample days:

Woke – 7am
Nurse – 8:15
Nap – 9:30am-10:40
Nurse – 12:05
Nap – 1:00pm – 1:45pm
Nurse – 4:00
Nap – 4:00-4:30
Nurse -5:45pm
Nurse – 7:00
Bed – 8:00
Woke @ 9:30, 11:00, 12:30 – no feed
Woke at 1:00am - feed

Woke and nurse - 5:30am
Nap – 8:00-10:00
Nurse 10:00am
Nurse @1:15pm
Nap 1:20 - 3:00pm (woke briefly at 1:50pm)
Nurse @4:45pm
Nurse @ 7:15pm
Bedtime @ 7:25pm, asleep by 7:40pm
Woke @ 10:15pm (went right back to sleep with a soother)
Woke @ 1am (was up for almost 2hrs…tried everything)

Woke @ 8:30am
Nurse @9:00am
Nap @ 10:45-12:05pm
Nurse @ 1:30pm
Nap @ 2:30-3:30pm
Nurse 5:30pm
Asleep at 7:40pm (in car)
Nurse@ 8:00pm then right back to sleep
Woke @ 2:50am (fed, took until 5:00am to get him back to sleep)

My main thought now is his naps aren't that long earlier on in some of those days and maybe he needs a little more A earlier on in the day so he isn't UT and can take longer naps and doesn't have that long A time before bed so that he doesn't end up OT. On the days he woke early 2.5hrs seemed ok for him but with the later w/u he only took a shorter nap so he may need slightly longer on those days he sleeps later. What do you think?

Makes sense! So on an early morning, you think 2.5hrs before a nap is good, but maybe I should try and keep him up for 3hrs of activity on mornings when he wakes up later?

Any thoughts on how to get wake-up times to be more regular?

If EW are due to OT then if you get the routine going nicely they should sort out themselves.

Something like those times but watch him carefully it may be only 10 or 15mins difference.
