3 month old VERY poor sleeper during day
« on: June 07, 2010, 12:09:05 pm »
My 3 month old (touchy) has silent reflux and is on losec 5mg daily, since 8 weeks old, I have his cot elevated. I had alot of trouble with him sleeping in his cot during the day after weeks of being held upright to help with his reflux prior to medication; Over a week I was able to get him to sleep in his cot but he would wake screaming after 10mins (reading BW really helped me with solutions for what seems to be the 10min jolt) I had a few days there which really looked promising, a bit easier to settle and sleeping 45mins...I know thats not perfect but after 10mins it was HEAVEN! My problem now is that as soon as I observe the tired signs and wrap him, I only have to walk thru his bedroom door and he screams and is SO hard to settle, basically cries in my arms till he's asleep, He wont let me sit in the chair for 4S, so have been standing and patt/Sssshhh, He has gone back to the 10/20min sleep again! Its so tiring and such hard work, particularly when I have two other children (4 and 2) wanting my attention. My four year old has started to get very naughty, I know its as a result of the large amounts of time I am spending with my son settling every nap. I know its really only been a week and Im probably expecting too much so early but he's fine till I walk into his room (if I walk back into the hallway he stops!).
I need some help and reassurance that what Im doing is correct, Im feeling so down about it all and feel like everyday is the same old thing over and over :'(
Any help would be great! Id be happy with 45min naps in the day as he's fantastic at night 8-10hr, feeds then another 3/4hr. But as soon as the suns up, 10 min naps and crying start all over again.
I generally give up settling after an hour of crying and 10min nap and feed again, so he's on a 2hr EASY. Awake time 1hr and at very best on a wonderful day nap 45mins

hi there, are you able to put up your routine in EASY format for us to see how the whole day is? even just how yesterday went, this will give us a better picture of things :)

also have you tried darkening his room? just that you mention as soon as the sun is up hes up for the day, could it be too light in his room? we have to make Calebs room pitch black for him to sleep

Hi, Thanks. Yes his bedroom is dark (blockout curtains) He generally sleeps till 7 or 8am then all naps from then on 10mins-45 at very best (and 45minute nap is rare!)
Our routine is all over the place due to poor napping but Ill give you some idea...
Here was yesterdays EASY (or not so EASY!!!)

Woke 8am
E 8am and medication for reflux
A 1hr 10 mins
S 9.10-9.20, 9.35-9.50
E 10am
A 1hr 30mins
S 11.20-11.40, 11.45-12.05
E 12.05pm
A 1hr 25mins
S 1.30-2.15
E 2.15
A 1hr
S 3.15-3.25, 3.30-4pm
E 4pm
A 1hr
S 5-5.10, 5.20-5.35
A 1hr 10mins
E 6.45pm and straight to bed
S 7pm-4am
E 4am
S 4-7am
E 7am

Sorry its so crazy but this is my day :(
I feel like all I do is settle a crying baby and my poor 4 and 2yr olds are left to fend for themselves which is why I give up settling and feed every 2hrs and start all over again, its just so very very draining! As you can see Y just does not fit into my EASY. EXHAUSTED!!!!

oh dear, ok, i think your first A time needs to go up a little bit, a 3 month old usually has around 1.5 hours A time, what i think is happeneing is that the first A time is too short and so hes not really ready for sleep, but all the fighting sleep gets him OT and then after that you havent shortened the following A time to compensate for the short nap, so if you do get a short nap, shorten the following A time to about an hour otherwise he is spiralling into OT.

also what kind of wind down do you do?
what temperament is your baby?

OK, we didn't have an older child to placate when we went thru some similar stuff with Josie, but we did manage to get it sorted, partly with Tracy's help and partly with meds: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=649.0
