Won't eat hot food
« on: June 20, 2010, 20:38:02 pm »
How can I get my LO to eat hot food? Eats quite a good range of foods but will only eat them cold. If I don't blow on it for him to make it cool he just doesn't eat it until it is cold. Makes a fuss about it being too hot often.

Has he burned his mouth? Is the food quite lukewarm? They do have more sensitive mouths than us, and taking a bite of something too hot will really put them off. Can you teach him how to blow on his food for himself? How old is he?

My DS doesn't like hot food either ::). We have always had to blow food and he makes a huge fuss if it is hot and then won't eat any. As he is getting older the fussing is less and he does eat things warmer - but he's such a slow eater it's cold anyway by the time he's finished. When we eat together I try to dish his up first so it has a chance to cool a bit by the time we all sit down - makes food times a bit calmer ;).

Like PP suggested we have taught him to blow it for himself now, and if he thinks it's cool then he's ok. As they get older I'm sure they will "toughen" up and be able to eat warmer food.

Ditto.  My 2.5 year old is a huge drama queen about anything being too hot.  She makes a big production about blowing on things, even if she knows good and well that they are cooled down.  To my knowledge, she never experienced any terrible burn from food either.

He is 2 yrs and 10 months. May have burned mouth before wanting to eat chips too quick but not for a long time. Does blow a bit and often asks me to blow. Will just keep going with him. Thanks for help.

would agree that kids can be more sensitive to oral motor stimuli than we adults and when they DO experience stunuli more strongly they have less ability to self calm, tell themselves that its okay and use strategies.
honour his need to have cooler food whilst demonstrating strategies (blowing, waiting, ice cube etc)
good luck :)

i always dish dds food first and then pop it into the freezer to help it cool off.  i have put an ice cube in her chili or soup before too, too hot and she won't touch it.

funny - i've watched her play in her play kitchen and she takes the food from the oven, onto the dish and into the freezer  ;D ;D so i think she likes the routine!
