frusterated wtih short naps
« on: July 17, 2010, 14:37:36 pm »
almost 5 month old DS has done shrot naps since forever.  I currently do w2s for his naps, and have done that for about 2 months.  We used to have more sucess, but now it seems like only 1 out of his 3 naps for the day are extended  due to w2s.  for some of his w2s naps he will wake up even earlier than if I hadn't done it/

i don't have luck with holding through the jolts, because it is not the jolts that wakes him up, he just thrashes around in his crib.

what I currently do is as soon as he wakes from a short nap, and puthim in the sling and am able to get him to knock out for another 45.  I had read somewhere about a mom doing this but putting her LO in a swing.l  He doesn't seem to have any problems goign down to sleep independently, so I don't think this is a problem.  But I am sick of doing it.  i initially started it because I wanted DS to get into teh habit of sleeping long stretches, but it doesn't seem to have helped in the long run.

should i just let him take his 45. min nap and let him figure it out on his own, no w2s and no sling?

His current A time is 1 hr 50 min.  which I think I am pretty spot on with what he needs.

Hi there!!  I totally feel your pain!  My DS1 was a CHRONIC short napper - in fact he was one of those that didn't outgrow them around 6 months like most babies do.  He didn't nap longer until he switched to one nap (around 17 months).  I don't say that to discourage you by any means, jsut want you to know you are not alone and it won't last forever.

First off, you might want to start slowly increasing A times.  Babies at 5 months on average are doing 2 - 2.25 hours of A time.  Increase A time slowly by doing it in 5 or 10 minute increments.  This usually helps with the short naps.  I would not do W2S anymore since it is not working.

Once I tried all I could to extend DS1's naps, I just gave in and let him take his short naps.  I was much happier not stressing about it and I just changed his routine to fit it around the naps.
