Breastfeeding and solids
« on: July 31, 2010, 16:24:08 pm »
Hi,

I am confused on giving solids and breastfeeding. I read that we're supposed to wait about 45 minutes to 1 hour after BF to give solids because otherwise the milk is not digested properly because of the solids intake. But I was also told that this is not true and we can give solids right after BF. Which is true? How long after you BF do you give your baby solids?

Thanks!

The thing about giving solids an hour, hour and a half after BF is to give your LO time to be hungry enough to want to try the food,
What I done with DS was to BF and the give solids 1.5hr later. But sometimes it could be just an hour...

Can't be true about the milk not getting digested- think about cereal that is supposed to be mixed with breast milk.

I never waited an hour, when ds was younger he ate his solids 30 min after a bf, now it's even less time between (because he's not drinking other liquids yet). I think as long as they are eating their solids it doesn't matter how long the time between is. The reason for the time between is to make sure they are hungry enough for the solids.

Thank you Tay and First Time Mom for the replies! This makes sense and I feel much better now. My DD is such a big eater that giving solids right after BF or waiting a couple of minutes to an hour won't make any difference, as she will still eat them! But now I know that it doesn't have anything to do with the digestion of the milk! Thank you again for the help!
