Are we heading towards a routine tweak?
« on: August 05, 2010, 11:14:14 am »
Madi will be 21 months on the 11th of August and her routine has been the same for a very long time now.
wake around 7am
nap around 12:30pm-2:30pm
bedtime 7:45pm

We had a few months of EWs(6:30am) and I believe by gradually reducing her nap from 2.5hours to 2hours and 10min, in combination with the right A before bed, she was waking at 7am. We do have the occasional EW but nothing severe.
This morning she woke up at 5:30am crying. I normally wait a few minutes to see if she settles but this time she didn't. I went into her room and found her teddies on the floor. I assumed that is why she was crying. I gave them to her and left the room. Let me tell you, she absolutely freaked.  >:( She cried and cried like someone was strangling her. I attempted WI/WO a few times, but that only further agrivated her. I decided to sit at the edge of her bed, comfort her by telling her that mommy is here and it is time to sleep. She looked like she was going to settle but then a few minutes later she started naming her body parts and rolling around in her bed. She seemed very restless at first and then she began to play. I wonder if it was because I was in the room with her.  After an hour and a half of this she finally rolled on her tummy and fell asleep at 6:50am.  I am planning to wake her at 7:30am this morning and aim for her usual nap time.

I am such a perfectionist that when something goes wrong I tend to overanalyze things.  :P
Anyhow, I have been debating if I should push her nap forward but am a little skeptical because it seems she likes to nap a little earlier now. On days that I do push her nap out, due to waking up earlier, she wants to nap longer then 2hours. If I wake her, she becomes the crankiest toddler I know. :-[ Should I leave it as is and reduce her daytime nap to 2hours on the dot? Is it possible that her teeth are bothering her? If this persists, should I push her nap out? Was it a good idea for me to sit at the edge of her bed?

During this moment, I kept thinking horrid thoughts of me in her room trying to settle with a nb crying in the other room.

TIA

Agree with Lucy, try 2 hrs, those few minutes might make a big difference to Madi.  She tweaks well so I would give it a try.  Finn finally likes his long nap too but alas we have cut him to 2 hrs and we have had several 11 hour nights from him, or as close to it as he can get.

Wow look at you - down to the wire now with #2!  Looking forward to seeing the new addition!!!

Things will change when number 2 comes though. J had one random night where he SCREAMED for an hour as he wanted to sleep in my room with me and the baby.

He is quite big on things being in the proper place so eventually went down with the 'mummy sleeps in her bed, daddy in his, Megan in her cot and Jacob in his'. I was NOT expecting that one though.

Personally I wouldn't get into a GW situation at this point as you will very likely need to be with the baby - I find Megan is often unsettled at that time of day.

Pre baby I handled EWs by WIWO/ leave too it if not screaming for me. Post baby I just get DH to get him up as I need to be with Megan and can't committ to mega sleep training.

((hugs)) but don't obssess after one odd morning - honestly - her sheet might have tickled her toe  ;) :-* :-*

thanks ladies.

Liz, I am afraid of things changing. I really hope the changes are not too severe.

I am in a panic on how I will manage the two of them at night since hubby works nights. Thankfully, I have my mom staying with me after hubby goes back to work.   :'(
I sure don't want a toddler screaming in the early morning when and if the baby is sleeping.

I woke her at 7:30am and put down for a nap at 12:30pm. I plan to let her sleep for two hours but am not sure what time bedtime should be.  7:30-8pm?

if she does 2 hours and wakes at 2.30pm I would do an 8pm bedtime.
Try not to worry too much Sabs - there is always going to be a bit of chaos when a new lo arrives but you have Madi on a great routine and I am sure you will get your new lo on one too in time.

Yup was going to say what Becky said.  Although she's used to 7:45 so you might just try that and see how she does with it.

Thanks for the support! She was down at 7:45pm. I am hoping for a decent wake up time tomorrow.
