Yogurt
« on: August 23, 2010, 16:44:21 pm »
Hello - Ladies in the US - what yogurt are you giving to your LO?  Plain yogurt is so sour and that is about the only full fat yogurt that I see.  Everything else seems to be lowfat, no fat, low calorie, etc.

I used the plain yogurt and added in an All Natural, No Sugar Added jelly - the brand is Polaner. My DD LOVES it! She loves the strawberry, but there are some seeds in it, so depending on the age of your LO, you might skip the strawberry. The blackberry has no seeds in it. Hope that helps! :D

When we were in the US, there was a brand YoBaby that had flavors like banana and stuff. It was at Whole Foods. We had the opposite problem, as I was searching for plain and the flavored was the only kind they had :)

I gave plain yogurt and although my DD loved it plain, she also liked it with fruit purees in - have you tried that?

Try the plain yoghurt! My LO loved (and still loves) it! Also agree with Leanne, you can get the plain yoghurt and just add a spoonful or two of unsweetened fruit puree.

I used to freeze small cubes of purée so always had them to hand for each meal. DD loved yogurt so had it twice a day! In fact, the first time we gave it to her she not only dropped her df that night but also her nf!!!! It was our saviour! So much so, for weeks we didn't dare not give it to her at tea time! Like there was some magical ingredient!!!!! LOL

We use plain yoghurt here, and even though I find it a little sour (but eat it nonetheless!!) DS likes it as he's just used to eating it plain.  It is nice with a little vanilla bean paste too  :)

I also used the Yo Baby (the variety with the fruit puree already added).  However, by the time DD was about 12 months old, she tired of it- I think maybe the flavor was too mild, so we just switched to a small snack sized Yoplait creamy style yogurt.  When my store stopped carrying that, I gave in and let her have the ones specifically marketed to kids.  When I compared the calories and sugar content to Yo Baby and other ones I expected to be more healthy, I found the difference to be negligible (although I am not a fan of the dyes they use to create some of those weird colors).  I like the above posters idea about plain yogurt with a bit of jelly or puree added.

I'm with some of the others, I love the plain yogurt! Both dd and now ds love it too. I think if you give it to your lo you might be surprised, we always have this perception of them not liking what we don't like but it's not the case (ie. I give scrambled eggs to my dd and say "yummy" but I turn my head and gag :P). We are quite used to having sweet foods but los are not.

You are looking for the same thing I am :)

I used to use plain and mix it with fruit puree.  When DS was starting to reject a spoon, I mixed it in equal parts so it was pretty runny and put it in a sippy cup with no valve.  Then it was like a smoothie.  Now he has figured out that we eat yogurt too, but we use a spoon and it comes in special cups, so he wants ours now.  The brand I currently use (Mountain High) has vanilla yogurt in the low fat and fat free versions, but haven't found it in the whole milk stuff yet.  Maybe a place like Trader Joes would have something like that?

Thanks for all the replys. Is it bad to give them low fat or fat free yogurt?

I don't think there's any reason to give low fat or fat free unless the Dr has advised it. At this age they need fats for growing! Low fat and fat free yoghurt also tends to be more sour than full fat.

We use Stonyfield's YoBaby yogurts.  They do have added sugar, but I think it's very little...I compared YoBaby (with added apple and sweet potato) with regular apple baby food and it's only a 2 gram difference.
Also, have you looked at greek yogurt?  I know I've seen several full-fat varieties in the grocery store and those come plain.

My cousin says that Trader Joes has flavored full fat yogurt.  But she lives in the Bay Area, so you might want to call first.  That is, if you have one close.

Brown Cow has a variety called 'cream top' that I think is full fat. There are several flavors including plain- I just bought some to try with my little man for his next new food. I know they carry it at Whole Foods but I've seen it at other stores, too.
