Almost 9 mo - NWs for ages
« on: August 06, 2010, 18:19:47 pm »
My 8.5 - 9 month old has been waking in the night for quite a while now and I was trying to be chilled about it and waiting to see if it would go, and it hasn't so here I am!  We have also had about 6 weeks of on/off EWs which have recently stopped following a bit of A time tweaking, but the NWs are still here.  The last 2 nights she's been awake in the early hours for between half an hour and an hour just chatting or moaning to herself.  She tends to wake between 1am and 5am most nights - sometimes it's just one cry and then back to sleep (this is fine!) and others she's awake for an hour (this is not!).

She's also been sleeping very late in the mornings and I've been having to wake her at 7, which means her daytime sleep has been much lower than usual over the last couple of days.  She used to sleep 3.5 hours a day every day and 11.5 - 12 hours at night but we can't fit all this in anymore!  Here's how the last 2 days have gone...

Wake @ 7am

E: 7.30am 6ozs & breakfast an hour later
A: 3hrs
S: 10am for 1 hour (I've had to wake her for various things the last few days.  If I left her she'd sleep for 1.5 - 2 hours)

E: 11.45 lunch & 6 ozs at 2ish
A: 3hr 15 - 3 hr 30.
S: 2.15 / 2.30.  I always wake her at 4.  Usually she's had about 1.5 hrs by this point.  Again, she'd sleep 2 hours here if I let her.

E: 5pm tea & 6.45pm bottle (7-9 ozs)
A: 3hrs
S: 7pm bedtime. Always happy through bath and up to bedtime, and settles well.

Do you think there's anything I could tweak to help the NWs?  I wondered if her afternoon nap is too close to bed but don't want to cut it too short and push her too much before bed?  Having looked at the sample routines most babies there either wake earlier than Lily or have a lower A time than her so just not sure what to cut where.

I've also read the "10/11 month old sleep gone wonky" post and I'm not sure that 2:1 transition a factor yet as this has been going on for a while (the NWs and EWs started at 7 months) and we haven't had any nap refusals.  In fact she loves her sleep!  I do wonder if she's ready for a bit less daytime sleep though?  Just not sure how to go about it.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Thanks!  (And sorry for the mega post!)   :D

Great, thanks.  I'd been wondering about a later bedtime but we get to eat and relax late enough as it is!  Might try it on a day of easy dinners and see how we go.  It's funny cos it feels like she's not tired enough at bedtime but if she sleeps much less than she's having then she's grumpy so a later bedtime would let her have both I guess.  Might try it tomorrow. Thanks!   :)

Just a quick update on this - the later bedtimes did seem to help as both nights we did it she slept much better at night.  However, on the third day we had 1 OT nap and she cried out at 10.30pm which normally means she's a bit OT.  It might have been cos she had a tooth coming through though - that often makes her a bit OT too.  I've gone back to the 7pm bedtimes til the other tooth shows (this'll be number 8 so hopefully a little break from teething coming up!), or til she starts waking in the night again.

Thank you very much for your help - I have something to use now on days when she isn't tired enough at bedtime, or if she starts waking again.  :)

P.S.  She's still sleeping til gone 7am too! I'm having to wake her every morning and from every nap at the moment!  :D

(However, we're about to go away for a few days so that'll all change I'm sure...)

Yeah, I'm just waiting for the 2-1 transition horrors! I have a few ideas on how to handle them but no doubt when the time comes I'll be back on here, posting away!

I'm really missing her nice long naps though.  I always used to have 3.5 - 4hrs to do my own thing but now it's really been cut back!  I just joined the gym, planning to go while she's asleep (my husband works from home so not as bad as it sounds!) but now I can barely fit it in!  Oh well.  She'll be on 1 longer nap before I know it I guess.  I'll enjoy having 2 breaks a day while it lasts....
