9.5-month-old -- EASY problem or SA?
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:18:54 am »
Hiya,

We'd been doing great with our EASY since 4.5 months but recently hit a bump in the road. Could do with some fresh eyes to help us figure out what's going on.

About a month ago, DD started doing up to 4hr A's and night-sleep went from 12hr down to 11. Her first two A's took a dip for about a week recently -- probably related to cutting her 5th tooth -- but they're stretching out again now and it's difficult to fit everything in! Our current easy is something like this:

A  7-10:50  [3:50]
S  10:50-12:20   [cut to 1:30]

A 12:20-4:10   [3:45]
S 4:10-5:10   [cut to 1:00]

A 5:10-BT

That looks great in theory, but she's been really struggling to get to sleep at bedtime, which throws the routine off very quickly when you were only having 11-hour nights in the first place! She had been doing a last A-time of 2:30, having her WD, and going down easily. Recently, she's started crying inconsolably when put to bed and keeps standing up in her cot (she started pulling up and cruising a couple of weeks ago and does it constantly during her A time). We often give her more milk, just in case she's still hungry, but that's not usually it. She finally fell asleep at the 3hr (A) mark two nights in a row, so tonight we tried a bump in A time but she still got very upset. So I'm wondering if it's SA. She hasn't been clingy in the day -- although tonight she cried when I handed her to DH to be put to bed (he always puts her down at BT) -- but at night she tends to stop crying when I pick her up and sometimes will then go down without a peep.

If it is SA, will it become a prop if I give her a cuddle and pop her back down awake? It'd be fantastic if the only problem we're really facing is a spot of SA and all we need to do is give her more cuddles in the evening!

She woke at 3:40 last night but settled with a cuddle, which seems to confirm the SA idea.

I'm pleased to report that I think I've answered all my own questions. I took over from hubby putting her to bed tonight, gave her cuddles while she had her last bottle of milk, and she was asleep at 2:30 A after about 30 seconds of mantra crying! Here's to BabyWhispering :)
