more calories?? solids??
« on: August 21, 2010, 17:53:45 pm »
How can i up calories during the day so that LO doesn't wake up at night hungry? I'm not sure how i can get LO to nurse for longer or if i'm supposed to go back to the 3 hour EASY - that seems like he would get less milk (but maybe i'm incorrect).

LO had been sleeping through the night at 3 months old. And then the last month he has not. He just got his 2nd tooth in 2 weeks, so i figured teething was a factor.

LO is exclusively breastfed, and almost 20lbs. We have not started solids yet. I am wonder if we should start them, only because of the example in the BWSAYP book (page 144 in my book). Solids before 6 months - Jack weighed 18lbs at 4 months, large parents, taking 8 oz of formula every 4 hours and started waking in the night taking a full bottle. he was getting 40 oz a day, his tummy could only hold so much liquid and it obviously wasn't sustaining him. rather than keep a baby on a 3-hour routine, which is not appropriate for a 4 month old, solids were introduced.
This also is kind of confusing because I thought solids had less calories than milk, and so don't actually fill that need.

He has never nursed for longer than 10 min at a time - but goes (normally) 4 hours between nursing. He just started biting, so I am very hesitant to let him stay latched to suck when i know he isn't getting milk because he bites HARD.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi sweetie,
Look I'm not an expert but in my experience it is very normal for bf babies to wake up for a feed during the night...I'm sorry that you were getting STTNs and now you aren't but nws from teething happen a lot and it could be that your LO is growing again at the same time?!

Eating lots of nuts (sa almonds with good oils) and avocadoes are supposed to increase the fatty content of your breast milk, so it may help eating those every day.  Fenugreek and Blessed thistle are great for upping your supply if you think your LO isn't getting enough milk.

If you decide to feed more frequently then I would be more inclined to do a 3.5 hour EASY at this age than going back to a 3 hour EASY, I just don't think it will work if your LO has transitioned to a 4 hour....I would imagine that your LO will just bite more because he isn't really hungry.

I wouldn't really start solids at this stage unless you get doctor advice to, solids at this stage are usually more about experimentation than pumping up calories (but they can help with that if you suspect your LO is extremely hungry).  Is your LO showing an interest in food yet?  Watching you eat, reaching for your spoon if you are eating etc?  Those are the signs I would be looking for re introducing solids, rather than a night waking for a feed...

Sorry that's probably not very helpful!  I would probably give it a bit longer and see if your LO settles back down again now that the tooth has cut (bear in mind they usually seem to bring up multiple teeth at once) and I would just feed at that waking for now and see how things go.  Hope you aren't getting too too tired,
hugs sweetie
xx

I have to agree.  It's really very normal for BF babies to wake for a night feed at this age.   Check out this thread: http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=98183.0

Do you do a DF?  That can help. But, unfortunately, part of giving our babies the gift of mama's milk is NFs!  You'll make it through, I promise. I wouldn't start solids, either.

That said, any chance the new NW is routine-related?

I am not overly concerned with the little guy waking up at night to nurse. He is hungry because i try to hold him off, and he never wakes up at the same time - so i don't think its a habit or accidental parenting (but i could very well be wrong).
I do dream feed LO. He wakes anywhere from 4am to 6am - so i do get a good amount of sleep.
I think he is getting enough milk. He has been gaining close to a pound a week since he was born. I will try eating more nuts/avocados to see if that helps at all.
I really didn't want to start solids before 6 months - i really don't see a need.

unless my LO is in obvious discomfort (and even then sometimes) I just feed when she wakes of a night, but then she isn't gaining like your LO (well done you!!)
