Cow's milk causing constipation.
« on: January 25, 2011, 07:36:37 am »
Hi there,

I have recently switched Sam's milk from formula to cow's milk which he took to very well but it has left us with a problem. His stools are now less frequent and hard and he's really straining to go. He has three eight ounce bottles a day, but he is a very tall baby so larger than the average (just turned) one year old. I have water available for him all day and he does drink quite a lot. He also eats other dairy (yoghurt etc) during the day and he has at least 2 portion of fresh fruit. I'm now wondering if I should give him growing up milk for at least one of his bottles to put this problem right. That's if he'll take both, maybe he will have gone off the formula now. Or maybe I could try mixing the two? Any help and experience of this please? Oh and by the way he's never had a constiptation or hard stool problem before.

Thank You

Vicki.x.

I think it's a pretty common problem and will probably right it's self when he gets used to it. He is having a lot of milk, they only need 14oz of dairy to get their requirements after 1 year so it may be worth cutting down to two bottles a day which will give him plenty with his food.

Keep offering water and other laxative foods and if it's becomeing a problem you can give him something like lactulose which is a stool softener, your GP will be able to prescribe it.

Thank you,

He's just turned 1 on Saturday so I really hadn't considered cutting his milk yet, I needed a nudge to remind me. I will cut to two bottles from tomorrow and offer water in place of the midday bottle.

How about reducing that mid-day bottle over a few days? Dropping 8oz may be a bit of a shock for him so I would cut it back bit by bit and offer water after. You could drop 2oz at a time, so 6oz for a couple of days, then 4oz etc. The other thing to try if you are doing so is to offer his milk in a sippy in the morning and at meals as they tend to drink less at first. Again, you can go slowly, let him get used to milk in a sippy at mid day first, then swap the morning bottle to a sippy.

I'm also going to move this over to eating for toddlers which is a better place for it now you have a toddler on your hands!

Hi Laura,

I thought I'd let you know how the milk thing worked out. I have cut the morning and evening bottle to 7oz with 1oz of water added. And the midday bottle to 4oz with 2oz of water added. So this gives him 18 oz a day instead of 24 which I'm happy with and the added water seems to have helped the constipation, although his stools are still hard and not as regular as they used to be despite plenty fruit and vegetables, but he doesn't seem to be in discomfort. Thanks again.

Well done glad its helping. On the poo front though, remember he's eating proper food now, so he's developing and turning into a little person now, so no more baby poos, so try not to worry too much.

That's good! Well done!

Now the next thing is to switch those bottles for sippy/ straw or open cups ;)! I have been giving DD all her daytime milk in cups since she was about 14 months and this week we have made the switch to cup at bedtime too. No more bottles! Yeah! Hmmm... not sure I should be admiting to this as a bottle feeding mod ;) ;D

It is sad - mind you my little monkey decided a few weeks ago that she was waaaaay to big for bedtime cuddles with Mummy and a bottle :'( so a cup is easier for drinking while listening to stories with big brother! ;D
