Biting
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:16:17 am »
Ok, so the first two I'd stopped/was stopping bf'ing around the time their teeth came in.  Lewis has his bottom two teeth and had taking to on occasion biting me when he's feeding and it b!oody hurts!  I think his top two might be on their way as well but I honestly don't know if I'll be able to keep on feeding him if he keeps on biting me once he's got both sets of teeth.  Has anyone stopped bf for this reason or just gone through it?  I'd like to feed him for at last a year but if he keeps it up his bf'ing days could be numbered!

my two only bit at the end of feedings....fed them both till they had 16 teeth ish...

One piece of advice I heard was to push him even closer rather than pull away when he chomps down...and TRY not to react. I can remember well Oscar giggling at 7-8 mths when he got a huge OUCH reaction from me.

I was going to suggest the same thing as Shiv - Anna often suggests it and it works really well.  If you lean into them when they bite, your breast ends up covering up their nose.  They have to release the bite to take a breath in through their mouth.  They quickly realize that biting isn't pleasant for them either!

Also, when breastfeeding properly, babies can't bite with their bottom teeth because the tongue covers them up...  Do you find that he bites more at the end of a feeding (he might just be done) or when he's OT (might be sucking more for comfort than feeding)?

Here's a link with more information too:   http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=93368.0

yes it was definately a sing her that they were almost done feeding.....though Emma had a strange latch till around 6 ish mths (due to tongue tie corrected at 5 mths) and had her bottom teeth by then...

Yes it's always been at the end!  He didn't bite me yesterday but I pulled him away a bit earlier than usual to take the opportunity away!  Still waited for him to come off by himself but usually will see if he wants a bit more before switching sides or stopping so can try and eliminate the biting that way as well.

Thanks ladies, I'll remember the pushing in.   I did the natural reaction of pulling away when he started biting which I'm sure makes it hurt more!
