Where do I fit his naps????
« on: September 01, 2010, 18:54:27 pm »
Hiya,
DS is 9 and a half months old and has been on a good EASY routine for a while now. He is now on 3.45min A time and has dropped one milk feed in the last few weeks. His day usually goes like this:
E- He wakes up anytime between 6.45am to 7.15am and gets a milk feed
A
E - 8.30am solids
A
S - between 10.30am and 11am (for 1.5hr to 2hrs)
E - around 12.30
A
E- milk feed
A
S - 4pm (it's more like a CN, only 30/45min)
A
E- 5.30pm solids
A
E- 7/7.30pm milk feed
S- 7.30pm/8pm

My problem is: DD has just started nursery school today and she starts at 12 noon (until 2.30pm), exactly at the time DS is right in the middle of his biggest nap! I need to leave the house at 11.50am (it's just around the corner), so I'm not sure what to do and how to fit things in.
Today ended up a mess because I thought that since he woke up much later than his usual (he was up at 7.45am) that I could push it a bit and have him nap in the buggie on the way to DD's nursery but, of course, by 11.30am he was REALLY needing a nap. Thankfully MIL arrived and stayed with him while DH and I took DD to nursery. What happened afterwards was that DS didn't wake up from the nap until 1.40pm and didn't have a second nap at all. By 6.30pm he was exausted!
From monday onwards Dh will be doing this on his own and I know that if I don't 'guide' him on what to do I'll be arriving home from work everyday to an OT baby.
Please, any suggestions or solutions will be greatly appreciated!

{{{{{hugs}}}}}} That's rough with the timing of the school run!  My only thought is that you could approach as if you're starting the 2 to 1 nap switch - shorten his am nap and lengthen his pm nap.  So you'd start by cutting a bit off his am nap (you may have to cut more drastically since you've got time constraints), so you could actually put him down a bit earlier - he won't be as tired, so he won't be as messed up with being woken early.  Then you'd move the pm nap earlier, because he'll be more tired and not able to wait as long to take it.  Here's the link on the switch:  http://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=95670.0

I know he's probably not at the point for the switch, but it might give you a way to shift around his naps so it works with the school routine.

That's a good idea (especially since he does have a short nap in the afternoon anyway - and from  reading the link it actually seems like he's starting to show the early sign of the 2-1 transition anyway.
I'll try to get him down for his am nap at around 10.30am (which is slightly earlier than his usual nap time) and if he's not up by 11.45am I'll wake him up - and then put him down for his pm nap whenever he shows tired signs (but no later than 3.30pm). What do you think?

I think that sounds like a great plan!  It may take several days for you to see any difference in nap length, so don't despair if it all goes wonky at first.

Hi Tay....be interested to know how you get on as I'm in a similar position with taking & collecting DD from nursery.

I'm thinking of moving to set naps now DS is on 2 x naps per day, but the short AM, long PM is also a good idea!

Good luck!  :)
