Stored colostrum for 3 week old
« on: September 16, 2010, 14:41:03 pm »
I have an abundant supply and have had to pump since the day I got home from the hospital. My question is, I have two bags of frozen milk that are clearly mainly colostrum or early milk (orange in color). Should I give these to my 3 week old? I do not want to toss them but did not know if it would cause any problems if I did give it to her.

Hiya,
I just checked it out and it's absolutely no problem to give the colostrum to your baby. Apparently, if a mum gets pregnant and is still nursing her older child, she will start producing colostrum towards the end of the pregnancy and it does no harm to the older child.
The only thing to look out for is loser stools. And also that your LO might not feed as much (oz) as other BM since colostrum is much higher in calories.

Agree with Tay. :-*
My only question is, are you easing off on the pumping?  If you do it slowly and gradually, then you should be able to get  your supply to balance out with what LO needs and not need to pump.

I am trying because I am also dealing with an overactive let-down and over supply.

Not sure if you've had this info suggested to you (and apologies if you have) but this is useful info my LC friends often tell Mamas with forceful/overactive letdown and/or oversupply.  http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html

If LO doesn't take the stored milk straight-up, try mixing with some more freshly pumped milk.
