Heard of this before?
« on: September 09, 2010, 00:37:44 am »
Not sure where exactly to post this so please feel free to move it if necessary. Has anyone heard of the candida diet? And if so, is it safe to do it while breastfeeding? I really don't want to jeopardize my supply but I would like to try this diet as I am having issues with yeast/fungus and someone suggested I try it rather than something my doctor would prescribe.

Never heard of it...  What is it supposed to be like? Is there anythinbg you have to eat more?

I would guess, from the name, that you would probably cut down on bread, sugary foods etc, is that right? If so, it should affect your supply, as long as you're eating well otherwise.

I haven't extensively researched it all yet but basically you cut out ALL sugar. No fruit or anything. You can have olive oil, chicken, veggies, certain nuts and seeds and NO dairy. I just worry with cutting out fruits and dairy when I am breastfeeding, you know? I thought maybe someone would know more about it and tell me, yes go ahead or no, stay away :)

Hmmm.  I would say that as long as you make sure you're getting enough calories and calcium that it should be ok.  Vegan moms BF successfully all the time.  The no fruit is a bummer but as long as you're getting vitamins with the veg, I think it'll be all right.  You'll have to be very careful and monitor supply for any drops.  How old is your LO?  If s/he is older it will be less of an issue.

Just my 2 cents. :D

My LO is only 5 months and EBF, and I would like to keep it that way :) Any suggestions for ways of getting calcium without the milk? Also what would tip me off that I have low supply? Other than a hungry, cranky, baby?

Hungry, cranky baby who wants to eat all the time is usually a good clue that supply is dropping.  When Austin was 2 mo old I started getting back into my workouts and thinking about food intake a little too vigorously, I guess, and I knew within days that I had to lay off and relax since all he wanted to do was eat!

Here's a list of calcium sources: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=1061

You would also need to watch out for weight gain, wet and dirty nappies and if your baby is getting less interested in things around to get cues that mayeb your supply is dropping.

Can you eat any carbs at all?

Thanks so much. I found a website that tells you what you can eat, (not much). It just looks so sparse that I worry about the nutrition of DD. If you were in my shoes would you do it or just wait until DD is weaned?
Here is that website,

A naturopath can help you with this diet and recommend appropriate supplements that are safe. My DH was on a candida diet and the ND was so helpful. Obviously he wasn't BFding though! Lol. I am dairy free and my ND has recommended appropriate vitamins and supplements, including a calcium supplement. HTH :)

Hey sweetie,
Have a friend who was on this diet and yes it is incredibly restricted, however I think you could continue to breastfeed successfully, but you will need to monitor your calories, calcium, protein intakes etc.  If I were you I would probably contact a nutritionist so that they can help you to work out meal plans, snacks etc to make your days easier....
There are several mums on here who are on elimination diets (very restrictive) because of their LOs food allergies and intolerances, and all their bubs are doing well....you just have to be VERY organised, and have good support.

Hugs sweetheart and good luck

I have called a few ND's and am waiting to hear back from them now. The one couldn't see me until November! Thanks for the advice. On another note, DD was up screaming all the night and I took her to the doctor because I knew SOMETHING had to be wrong. Turned out she has an ear infection. Can't wait for everyone to be healthy again!
