Horrible long NW last night
« on: September 17, 2010, 09:14:51 am »
Morning all,

I have  a spirited son who is one tomorrow. WE seem to have got sleeping for him pretty sussed over the last year and he falls asleep independently for nearly every sleep. We are in the throws of the 2:1 transition but are managing a small sleep in the am followed by a longer sleep after lunch most days. Most days look something like this

A - 6.30 but he stays in his cot until nearer 7
S - normally goes down between 9.30-10 (1/2 hour)
A - 10-10.30
S - about 12.30 for 1 1/2 - 2 hours hours
A - 2 - 2.30
S - between 6.30 and 7

On Wednesday he seemed tiered and I thought he was maybe teething so let him sleep longer in the morning, he ended up having two 1 1/2 naps (first time he slept this much in a long time). He didn't really wan to go to bed but he was asleep by soon after 7.30 and slept for 11 hours. We were oyt yesterday morning and he wouldn't go to sleep in his pushchair so we had a 1 nap day (have been having a couple a week for the last few weeks). So looked like this

A - 6.30
S - 11.45
A - 1.55
S - 6.30

I did try putting him to bed at 6 but he just chatted to himself until about 6.25 when I heard him start his self soothing moan.

He then woke at 10.30 I was in the bedroom next door and there were no loud noises or anything which I would have thought would wake him. WE sometimes have NW when he is OT but then he wakes crying and is fairly easy to re-settle with a little back stroke and some shush shushing. This was completely different he woke and moaned for a few seconds before he started playing and chatting. He then started to call out for me, I went in to lie him down as as I walked in he grinned at me and was chatting away, I didn't make eye contact or talk t him just kissed him on the forehead and lay him down. He ended up being awake for over 3 hours, within this time I tried everything I could think of. I also have an older son who started school this week and is so tiered so resorted to taking him downstairs to sit in a room with the lights on dim, I haven't done this since he was newborn.

What does anyone think, may this have been a weird one off, was he OT and just showing it in a different way or was it having the extra sleep two days ago? Feel shattered after one night like that and it's not fair on my older son if it becomes a regular thing.

Not really sure what to do today either, should I try and let him sleep extra today to make up for last night or will that make it more likely he will be up half the night tonight??

I'd like to tag along if possible. We have been having about 1.5 hr playful NW the past few days DS has been on 1 nap also...normally they say that this is the LOs way of asking for more A time..but with only 1 nap albeit 2.5 hrs and a 7 hr A before bed I don't know if its possible. Maybe this is how "toddlers" show their OT??? How is your DS looking this morning?

Well he was up at 7.20 (so less than an hour later than normal) he was happy in himself, no fussing. Dropped my older son to school so he had nearly an hour in the buggy. Ended up putting him down a little after 10 so a shorter A than normal even for a two nap day and decided i'd let him sleep rather than waking him after 30 mins. he slept for just over an hour and is perky again now (just hope he doesn't refuse a pm nap!

What time is you LO's NW?

Kind of feel like it must be OT as can't believe it is UT but it's so different to anything we have had before???

Hmmm...I was reviewing your EASY and it looks strikingly similar to ours. I know most people say that after a 1 nap day, they should have an early BT, but DS doesn't go down before 12 hrs either. Our NW are usually about 4 hrs after he goes to sleep and he wakes up in the morning right around the 12 hour mark, so not less/more than usual. I am with you in that it feels like it should be OT, but its playing out like UT. Perhaps their night time sleep needs are dropping at this point. Did your DS do a 2nd nap? Hopefully someone comes along with some wisdom, because I can honestly say I am stumped.

Yeah even on his one nap days he doesn't seem to want/need an earlier bedtime but maybe I am missing sleep cues and I should be putting him down earlier although as we have a family dinner at 5 think I would be a bit stretched to fit everything in and get him down much earlier than I am.

How long have you been on one nap? Do you still have some 2 nap days?

Did manage to get another 45 minutes sleep in this afternoon. My husband has just managed to get him off to sleep after 40 minutes of taking turns to try and settle him. Feel pretty sure he must be OT now but still not sure what to try next.

Am hoping for a better night tonight for both of us!!

Happy late bday to the LO!!! How have your past nights been going ikesmummy?? Have you had any more long NWs? Was he able to get a second nap?

We still do a lot of 2 nap days as well, and I kind of try to follow the tired cues he's giving. Wouldn't  you know the day after I posted about his NW, he did a two nap day with first nap of 1.5 hrs and second of 30 min and then virtually sttn :)  Yesterday though, we did a 1 nap day, and he had a lot more NWs and more restless sleep. I'm kind of thinking that maybe the 1 nap days are making him OT, causing him the NW. Could this be a pattern in your case as well?  I did notice on your 1 nap day, the first A was pretty long, so maybe that could have played into it.

Hi hope that things are better your end, sounds like you have found a bit of a pattern which will hopefully help you avoid the really long NW. WE haven't had any wide awake NW since and we are now definitely teething, looks to have cut today. Not sure if that was effecting him but we have had loads of sleep here the last few days 2 1/2 to 3 hours each day split over two naps and 12ish hour nights has woken a couple of times and needed re-settling or some medication but otherwise doing well. Will see what happens once this bout of teething is over ad try to think of our next plan of action then!
