Help - Overtired or undertire - cant seem to work this out
« on: October 17, 2010, 20:10:52 pm »
Hi
My LO is now 2 years old and has always been a bad sleeper, an independent one (most of the time).
Her routine most of the time is as follows:

Wake up: 7.30ish
Nap: 1pm - 2.30pm
Wind-down from 6.30
In bed: 7.30 (generally talking/singing to herself)
Asleep: 8pm

Over the past few weeks, she doesnt seem at all tired at bedtime, I dont know if she is undertired, or overtired and hence, struggling to settle. She has also wanted me to stay with her until she is drowsy...
In addition to this, we had a really really late night on Friday night and she went to bed midnight...I was hoping that she would fall asleep at the party, but she just kept on going - and that night she had only 9 hours of sleep - since then we have had major major bed refusal and needs me in the room for ages...is she now so overtired that she cant settle, or just not tired enough...I have been letting her sleep until 8 or even later...
Now, if its OT, do I wake her at 7am in the morning, let her nap from 12.30 for as long as she wants and then aim for bed at our normal time of 7.30??
I must add she is low sleep needs...is spirited/touchy and very clingy (normal for her)..
Please help..
Thanx

Ash

I would do this, yes, but if she doesn't nap well offer a slightly earlier bedtime.  I would do this for 3 days to catch her up and see what happens.

Hi
I cant cope anymore...

I have been waking her at 7am to preserve naps and bedtime and in the hope that she'll overcome this horrid OT..
and now she has a horrible cold and is teething upper canines.
She was up at 5am this morning - only 8.5 hours sleep with 2 NW's..and so nap today was at 11.00, slept until 12.30. Tried super early bedtime at 6pm, def tired...and my hubby is still up there. She wants to be held, obviously cos she isn't well and I just cant be holding her for hours to get her to sleep. She is 2 years old and heavy. My back is bad as it is and now its worse and plus while I was up there initially trying to put her down, she was screaming and screaming and crying soooo much, so I sobbed with her. I cant do this anymore. So tired and emotional...
what can I do?
please help

give meds...nurofen ideally for the pain before bed and then as a df to help with the NWings. If her cold is bad then try raising the mattress slightly. I also use Karvol capsules on muslins and hang them around the room when my lo is sick.
She is going to need you - I know it is so hard but if she is sick and teething she needs reassurance and her mummy tbh.
It will pass - keep the meds up xxx

I gave her Nurofen before bed and Karvol. We also have a Karvol plug (really good)...I'm just not liking this wanting to be held until she has fallen asleep. Everytime I try and put her into the cot, she wakes and then we start all over again. She has finally fallen asleep, this has taken 2.5 hours - thats not right is it? Held her and placed her in the cot, she cries, try to comfort in cot, hold her again and repeat...I have to tiptoe to place her in the cot (I'm short...heheee)
I guess I'm just going to have to ride this one out

Thank you for responding so quickly

(((hugs)))

We have a karvol plug too they're great - you should get one Becky ;)

As she is sick you are just going to have to whatever it takes atm, as soon as she is well again we can formulate a plan to get her back on track.  I think at this stage rather than trying to get out sooner rather than later wait until she has been asleep 20mins before attempting to transfer her.  Then she *should* be in a deep sleep.  At least that way you won't keep trying and failing.
