13 month old standing up in cot
« on: October 21, 2010, 17:02:43 pm »
Hi everyone,
Wondering if anyone can help, EXTREMELY TIRED MUMMY!! Oliver has always been a bad sleeper (had reflux) and started to sleep through when i put him on soya milk (poo was always runny- sorry) and started on solids. At 8 months he started to wake once a night, but quickly got back to sleep. This summer ( 10months) inlaws came, and i had to work weekend nights. We moved oliver to his own room as he was sleeping well, and he woke twice a night but quickly got back to sleep. Then my MIL came-11 months and he woke several times a night and i believe, although she says she didnt, that she got him out of the cot several times. At the end of the month, he stayed at home (instead of nursery) as they were closed. In September, he started a new nursery who changed his timetable. He was then on:
E 8.30 am
A 9.00 am
Nursery 10am
E 12.30pm
S1/1.30
A2.30/3
E4pm (fruit)
we pick him up
S6pm (hes worn out)
A7pm
E7.30pm
bath 8pm
E8pm milk (or he goes mad)
then he would wake several times a night. At this point he started waking up, getting on all fours then pulling himself up to standing)
We thought it could be the change of timetable, at the weekend he naps at 11-12 am and then again at about 4/5 for an hour, (his old routine) although he still sleeps badly. We also tried doing bath first then dinner and it made no difference.
Naps are now getting to be impossible, he will only nap in our bed and just wants to play although he cannot keep his eyes open. Night time waking is up to 3/4 times and accompanied by screaming and crying. Im not sure what to do next. Change routine? We go in, lay him down and then he falls asleep and within an hour is up again, then by about 7 am he stands up and will not lie back down again. Any ideas please?

Thanks

Hi Jane -

What time is he waking in the morning, and when is bedtime? I think he's probably quite overtired, if he's worn out at 6pm and still up having bath and milk at 8pm.

It does sound like he is OT.  I would bring bedtime earlier if at all possible.  A 1.5hr nap for a 13mth old isn't very much with a long and action packed day.

I had a similar problem with my DD who was not napping well, and having several NW at 13 months.  Her am and pm naps were always different lengths and combined with the NW I was sure she must be very overtired.  Her regular bedtime before was about 8pm, wake up at 8am but wake up was getting earlier and earlier.  I started putting her to bed EARLY at 6:30pm for several nights, she still had the NW but was sleeping in until her normal wake up at 8am.  I also stopped picking her up at night, doing a 'gentle withdrawal' by going in to her room when she cried and talking to her, patting her bed, etc, but not picking up and not feeding her (this was our old crutch to get her back to sleep quickly).  Once she was back asleep I left the room.  Well 3 nights in a row we had fits of over an hour in the middle of the night but on the third night she slept through the night.  Phew!
I think it was a combination of overtiredness and some accidental parenting gone wrong.

Hi everyone,

Thankyou for all your replies.I too think that he is OT, we have been doing a later bath because his dad doesn't get back until then, although we have discussed the fact that its not working for Oliver. Problem is at nursery (he hates his new nursery) they cannot get him to nap in the morning and in the afternoon he is tired at 5/6 and if i let him nap at this time I was worried that it would affect his nighttime sleep?
Its also a problem with feeding as lunch is at 12.30pm and then (we are in spain) they give them snacks at 4 and i thought that giving him dinner at 6 might be too short a time between feeds?Especially as he has a beaker of milk before bed aswell?
Last night was very bad, and i have a feeling that he had night terrors caused by OT or perhaps illness as he has a very sore throat at the moment. He had already woken up several times (some because of coughing, others he stood up in the cot) He woke up screaming and was inconsolable for an hour, he seemed to have no idea i was there, and nothing i could do would calm him He thrashed around, completely confused, until the sound of my mobile ringing seemed to wake him up and he started to calm down. It was awful.
His wake up time was always 8 which is now becoming 9 because of his sleepless nights, ofcourse he also wakes up about 5 but goes back to sleep again. Bed time is usually between 8-8.30pm.
Obviously now with his sore throat its difficult to start anything but i would like to get him onto a new routine to see if it helps.
Thanks for all help/advice

I think you need to do what you can while he is ill and then once he's better we can formulate a plan. Perhaps no bath on nursery days to help him get into bed sooner?  I wouldn't worry too much about the feeding - if he's full he won't eat.

Hi,
Well Oliver is better. I made some big changes over these days, 1 was putting him back on his old routine, sleep for an hour at 11 then an hour at 3 and i had him in teh bath by 6.30pm and in bed by 7. Miracle of miracles he slept through, and has done since. The second has been to take him back to his old nursery. I took him today, and we had no screaming or crying, no clinging to mummy and no tears of relief when we picked him up
Problem now: day 1 as i said 11am sleep 3pm sleep and 7pm bedtime and slept through crying out once at 3 and going back to sleep. Day two, he was crying with tiredness (same wake up time as day before- 8am) by 10am. I put him down at 10.10 and he slept 45 mins max, which i compensated with an 1.5hr nap in the afternoon which he wanted to take at 2 not 3. Day three (nursery day) today he refused to sleep in the morn at nursery (although much happier all round) and when we got home (as he used to do when he went to this nursery) at 2pm he wanted to sleep and slept for 1.5hrs. So tonight by 5.30pm he was rubbing his eyes. I gave him dinner, which was a struggle an ended up giving him a bath at 6.10 and he was asleep by 6.40pm.He woke again at 7pm crying and standing up in cot. Does this mean that everyday will be different for naps? Will he start waking up earlier in the morning? Im not really sure how to correct this?
Thanks for all the help

It's totally normal to have nap issues when a LO starts nursery (or restarts as the case may be ;) ). I would just follow his cues for a couple of weeks and give him time to readjust.

Did he used to sleep ok at nursery?  If not then yes you may find nursery days he is more tired and you'll have to play catch up for a bit.  I agree with Jess, watch his cues for a bit and see what happens.
