Follow on milk
« on: January 02, 2011, 14:22:50 pm »
Just wondering if anyone switched their babies formula to follow on milk at 6 months? I didn't with my first baby as I heard it was not necessary but what are supposed to be the benefits? I guess there are some or why would they make it?!?

We've swiched to C&G follow-on. Apparently by the time babies are 6mo old, they have used all their stored iron from the womb/placenta, etc and follow-on is more iron-rich...

Follow on milks are basically developed to get around the advertising rules relating to first milks. Thye companies can't advertise milk for babies under 6 months and can't offer incentives like points on shop loyalty cards etc. They do contain more iron which some people find can cause constipation - we moved DS to the cow & gate comfort 2 but soon moved him back again for that reason.

Babies lay down their stores of iron in the last few weeks in the womb, so a healthy full term infant should be fine on normal stage 1 milk until they are 1 year when they can swap to cows milk. The stored iron does start to decline but I think more recent research has shown it isn't such a big need to supplement as previously thought.

You are fine to carry on with the stage 1 milk!

You have so much info, Laura! I love that about you!!! :)

I am finding that J is becoming increasingly constipated, and here I thought it was something I was doing wrong! More water! I said; More broccoli! I said. I think I'm better to swich back down...

And J was 8 days late... he should have PLENTY of iron from all of his lolly-gagging in there! :D

Thanks for the info - I think I will stick with the stage 1. Thinking of trying the goodnight milk though so I can drop the DF :)
