Dream feeds and night feeds - a few questions, what is right?
« on: December 22, 2010, 10:59:22 am »
Hiya

At the moment we do a last feed at about 6.30pm and my LO is usually settled by about 7pm, which is great. However, I've a few quick questions about DFs and NFs. (She is 3mo).

Currently I have been doing the DF when I go to bed (10/10.30pm). It took about a week for it to 'work'. Now I wait until she stirs just a little, presumabely in a lighter phase of sleep, and then it usually 'works'. When we have done it, it never seems to be a good feed. Always a very quick and quite 'lazy' feed so I'm not sure she's getting much.

1) Are there any tips on getting her to feed more fully at the DF?
2) I have tried getting her to feed both sides sometimes, but have never managed it - is it worth even trying?

Also, for the last couple of nights the DF hasn't really worked at all.
3) Do you try again 15/20 minutes later (i.e. later in her sleep cycle) or do you give up for that night?
4) If you give up, do you wait for her to wake you for the next feed?

5) If the DF does work, do you let her wake you for the NF? I've tried a couple of options, which would you recommend?
- Did a second DF at about 3am (because she stirred enough to wake me but didn't wake herself). Haven't spotted anything about second DFs and am not sure if people think there are big pros or cons....
- Wait for her to wake me for NF (anything from 2am to 5am at the moment, but if it's a late feed i.e. nearer 5am, it throws out our morning as she doesn't wake as early and doesn't really need a feed when she does).
- I could wake her for a NF as I know she can't sleep through at the moment, but I haven't done this since she was quite a bit smaller and it seems counter-intuitive?

Thank you in advance!

Hi!

I'm pulling this from far off memory, but I think if the DF didn't work at a particular time I would just move it 10 or 15 minutes either way, but try to keep it between 10 and 11:00 pm. I then let her wake for her other feeds as needed (she did 2 other feeds until she was 5.5 months and dropped them on her own)   I only offered the 2nd side if she was still rooting around for more, but if she fell back to a deep sleep I would leave it.  I remember for awhile the last nightfeed did give her a bit less appetite in the am if she woke early, but she was such a pig it never screwed us up too much, the odd time I would offer a 2nd feed right before her nap as a top up.
